DIXON DEMON Video Review
Here's a review of the Dixon Demon Drum Kit that's being featured in Dixon's "Drum Your Way to Hollywood" contest. This video was done solely by me at the behest of Dixon. I am in no way affiliated with Dixon Drums or the Kaman Music Corp. (Though I would like to be). This was taped using a JVC Evario Camcorder. All the sound was recorded using a ZOOM H4 Handy recorder. The drums were miked using an SM57, Beta 52A, and the Digital Reference drum mic kit. This is the first segment of Paul's 10th anniversary show as it aired on WLWT in Cincinnati, Ohio (also rebroadcast in Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis and other midwest cities). Paul's wife and daughter appear along with Bonnie Lou &Marian Spelman.The Paul Dixon Show premiered on Cincinnati's WLWT in 1955. The show began as a half-hour program, but later expanded to 90 minutes. Avco Broadcasting Corporation, who owned WLWT, syndicated Dixon's show in other markets where they owned TV stations, including Columbus and Dayton, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodyman - Long Hot Sexy Nights
Kenny Dixon Jr. is this a$$hole from Detroit who likes roller skating and makes incredibly house tracks. His smooth, dark, "dubby" style differentiates him from most house from Detroit which sounds more mechanical (Theo Parrish) and the more aggressive Chicago style of house music characterized by Derrick Carter. There are only a couple of artists that have a similar style, older Nick Holder which is characterized by more Latin rhythms and percussion (Singing) and Chez Damier who is longer producing tracks.Kenny Dixon's dj sets are also pretty ridiculous. When he's not wearing a ski mask or other garment to hide his identity, he has a tendency to stop records while they are playing and talk to the crowd.Kenny Dixon Jr/Moodymann's tracks are incredibly hard to mix into any set because of how unique the sound is. The old band had been good, but we wanted to see and hear what was so good about the new band, they were supposed to start playing at 9 p.m. and Billy's start times are never ever late.The Yale was already packed with people, many already standing on the wall near the raised bandstands stage, but that would change in five minutes when the band started playing, the dance floor would be full, the rule being "if you move you lose your spot".Billy Dixon is the consummate and complete entertainer in every way, he believes that practice makes you perfect, that is why he and his new band practice time and again every week. As you watch him getting ready to sing and perform, you will see a brief smile and then a switch is turned on in his head and his facial expression will change to pure joy, he loves to be center stage entertaining. With the recent passing of the master of funk James Brown also known as holding the title of "the hardest working man in show business" It seems Billy Dixon will now via for that glorious title.Billy started singing right on time with a few fast numbers that had the dance floor full and the building was shaking, which allowed that waiting crowd to relieve all that pent up energy and desire to move. The new band is excellent and with togetherness and in tune on each piece, as usual Billy always allows each band member the freedom to express and their individual skills and talents, which are many at every performance. The new band consist of; A.Train on bass, Michael Burt on drums, Olaf De Shied on guitar, Mark Olexson on keys, Brock Miller on sax, Malcolm Aiken on trumpet.and his "Solid Gold" Sisters of Soul, Lillooet Fox on vocals, Patricia Raye on vocals.This new band is so excellent together that they could only appear together on a raised stage, otherwise the crowd would mob them with delighted enthusiasm, for such a great night of pleasure, music and fun.
