Doch dann verlässt sie das Glück: Der Vater (Michael Fitz) wird auf der Flucht von der Polizei erschlagen, die Mutter (Stefanie von Poser) muss ins Gefängnis. Kurz danach wird auch Mathias Kneißl (Maximilian Brückner) wegen einer Schießerei unschuldig eingesperrt.Als er endlich aus der Haft entlassen wird, steckt er voller Zukunftspläne: Er will ein anständiges Leben führen und träumt davon, mit seiner großen Liebe Mathilde (Brigitte Hobmeier) in Amerika neu anzufangen. Doch dafür fehlt das Geld, denn ehrliche Arbeit bekommt der "Zuchthäusler" nicht. In seiner Not lässt er sich auf einen "todsicheren" Raubzug ein: Bei den reichen Bauern gibt's fette Beute. Bald sucht die Polizei fieberhaft nach dem Räuber Kneißl, der einfach nicht zu fassen ist.Mathias Kneißl war ein Wilderer, Räuber und Mörder, der meistgesuchte Verbrecher seiner Zeit - und genoss größtes Ansehen bei den kleinen Leuten. 1902 wurde er hingerichtet, doch noch heute ist der Räuber Kneißl eine Legende. Aus der Not heraus wurde der Kneißl kriminell, aber er war kein schlechter Mensch. Er war ein Rebell, der beherzt der Obrigkeit Widerstand leistete. Das Rebellische ist eine bayerische Tugend, die sich bis heute vom Protest der Milchbauern bis zum schlitzohrigen Umgehen des Rauchverbots zeigt. Denn wenn man ihn zu sehr bevormunden will, regt sich beim Bayern der Widerspruchsgeist: Mit mir ned!Regisseur Marcus H. Rosenmüller verfilmte das abenteuerliche Leben des Räuber Kneißl mit dem sicheren Gespür für bayerische Geschichten, das er schon in seinem OSCAR-prämierten Erstlingsfilm "Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot" mit Riesenerfolg bewies.
