BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Pop music legend Paul McCartney says he's carrying a message of peace for Israel and the Palestinians. He visited the West Bank town of Bethlehem a day before his concert in Tel Aviv.McCartney toured the Church of the Nativity, built over the traditional birthplace of Jesus. He took pictures with a small camera and lit two candles. He said they were for peace.Outside the church, McCartney was asked to respond to criticism that his visit to Israel supports its occupation of the West Bank.He said his visit Wednesday to the West Bank showed he was not playing favorites. He said, "I'm here to highlight the situation and to say that what we need is peace in this region, a two-state solution," referring to Israel and a Palestinians state. [ More Detail ]

May 2005It's a side of Israel the world rarely sees. We gain unique access to conscripts away from the battlefield and see how a drugs culture is helping them unwind. The techno clubs of Tel Aviv are packed with frenetic clubbers. Nearly everyone here is a soldier. "The weekends are my time to just be a teenager," states IDF soldier Helena Moshe. Officially, no serving soldier uses drugs. But Israeli youths are notorious for their use of party drugs like ecstasy. "Young people have to grow up very fast in Israel," states Dr Tina Berkovits. Everyone is expected to do national service but the horrors they experience in the army are rarely discussed. "They have a bad time after they see what they see," states Berkovits. "They all have post traumatic stress syndrome." [ More Detail ]
New York Magazine chose Tel Aviv as one of the best weekend getaway (April 23, 2007)Here is the full text: Tel Aviv may be in the heart of the Holy Land, but its all-hours, pansexual, smoker-friendly, inexpensive club scene is anything but pious (and the city is increasingly safe). The weekend starts Thursday night, so leave Wednesday night (El Al has an 11:50 p.m. flight from JFK that lands just in time for dinner the following day). Book the Cinema Hotel (from $120), a converted thirties movie house a short stroll from the Mediterranean. Having slept on the flight, get your groove on early with dinner at Nanuchka (28 Lilenblum St.), a Georgian supper club; wash down tinakali (cheese dumplings with yogurt) with vodka shots, and maybe some dancing on tables to post-Soviet Slavo-pop. Flag a cab for the short ride to Ha-oman 17 (88 Abarbanel St.), Tel Aviv's megaclub of the moment, which imports international D.J.'s like Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren for its Thursday-night parties. Wake up in time for a late Friday lunch at the aptly named Betty Ford (48 Nahalat Binyamin St.) to recharge on its hefty half-pound burgers and a big chug of Goldstar (the local brew); pass the afternoon souvenir-shopping and hottie-spotting at the outdoor crafts market just up the street. Take a disco nap before a late dinner close to clubland at coffeeBar (13 Yad Harutzim St.), with its perfect steak-frites and sexy crowd. Continue to Barzilay Club (13 Harechev St. ), a nearby six-month-old hipster dance haunt, and then to the G-Spot (40 Salame St. ), whose D.J.-owner, Nir Mamon, spins the latest rap hits straight outta Brooklyn. Well past midnight, explore the Breakfast Club (6 Rothschild Blvd.; no phone), a smoky, shameless after-hours pickup spot, or Evita (31 Yavne St.), its nearby gay equivalent. Enjoy a late Saturday brunch at the alfresco Shalvata (Tel Aviv Port) with a cocktail while admiring prime Mediterranean views. Spend the last few hours on the beach itself, before heading back to the airport for El Al's midnight flight to New York. You'll land early the next day—leaving plenty of time to recover before Monday morning.Israel Forever!See you this summer in Tel Aviv :)Peace &Love!Holly [ More Detail ]
A safari park just outside Tel Aviv decided to stage an Olympic event for tortoises. Complete with Olympic rings, the organisers lined up half a dozen Sudanese giant tortoises on a 300 metre track. The tortoise team in Ramat Gan claimed a new record for sprinting: one kilometre per hour, compared with three hundred metres per hour previously. Official scrutineers were absent from the event, and it was unlikely that the International Olympic Committee would allow the record to be called an Olympic one. www.itnsource.comReuters 12375/04 [ More Detail ]
