The Dresden String Trio plays in the hall of the Old Bourse (Alte Börse) in Leipzig1. Contrapunctus VIII2. Contrapunctus XIIIa3. Contrapunctus XIIIbThe term "baroque" applies in music as it does in architecture. As a baroque composer, Bach was surrounded by baroque buildings in Leipzig. The oldest of these was the Alte Handelsbörse (the old trade exchange) on the Naschmarkt, built by Leipzig merchants between 1678 and 1687 and used nowadays as a concert venue. In his late compositions, Musical Sacrifice and The Art of the Fugue, Bach made no clear stipulation for the order of instruments. Apart from the organ and the piano, string instruments are particulary suited to succesful interpretation of The Art of the Fugue (1749-50).The Dresden String Trio was founded in 1995. Jörg Fassmann (violin), Sebastian Herberg (viola) and Michael Pfaender (violoncello) hold leading positions in the Dresden State Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting corporation. Apart from performing classical string trio, the ensemble also plays contemporary compositions. [ More Detail ]
Just like Anna Russell before him, Peter Schickele is well-known for his parodies of classical music traditions. Though Schickele took the whole thing a step further by creating a whole musical personality, P.D.Q. Bach, "youngest and the oddest of the twenty odd children" of J.S. Bach. He has used this guise to write quite a lot of music, including a couple of "operas" in various quantities of acts. Surprisingly, considering the fact that P.D.Q.'s "music" basically lampoons classical music, Schickele seems to be quite a talented composer, some of the musical ideas he uses can be quite contagiously brilliant (the third "piece" here features a quite wonderful bass line, so wonderful, in fact, that I really do think that a couple of excellent singers could make the piece into a serious one (incidentally, do listen to the words, most of the humor lies there)). Presented here is a parody of musical pieces utilizing the basso ostinato or the ground bass. I am also providing a link to the album from which this piece is taken, just in case you want more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intimate_P._D._Q._BachEnjoy and do try to take the pieces as far away from seriousness as you can :)!P.S. By the way, for people who have guessed the identities of the people on the painting I have used for the backdrop, I'm not trying to lampoon either of the people on it, I just found that the painting went well with the music :)! http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/gtc Radio Toast only plays superb music you may never have heard before. If you enjoyed this post, please donate anything you can (before August 2008) to Cancer Research UK using the link http://www.donatetomyrelay.org/gtcIs this the most moving and dramatic ending in the history of music? J S Bach dies in the middle of composing the fugue for three cellos- it remains unfinished, simply cutting off where he got up to.Some very nice pictures of the man and where he lived (mostly Leipzig). I even got his grave in at the end (bit cheesy, I know)! From 'The Art of Fugue' BVW 1080. [ More Detail ]
