Amazing gutsy cello solo version of Piazzolla's Tango by Georg Mertens live recorded 21 June 08 in the underground Cathedral Chamber at Jenolan Caves. Concerts are held every 3d Sat. of the month. Bookings (AU) 02 6359 3911 Program:"http://www.georgcello.com/cello.htm" [ More Detail ]
It always intrigued me to transcribe this piece for cello. I had performed it often on guitar; the middle part seems to lack sustainment on the guitar. Although the fast parts suited the guitar, I just wanted hear the middle apart on cello. I transcribed bar by bar, waiting for the impossibility to arrive, waiting for: You can't do it! But it didn't happen. To my surprise without too much compromise the complete piece suited the cello as well as the guitar (the original is for piano and sounds pretty boring). This recording is the live recording from 21 June 08 Cathedral Chamber at Jenolan Caves. Concerts are held every 3d Sat of the month. Bookings (AU) 6359 3911 . Program:"http://www.georgcello.com/cello.htm" [ More Detail ]
Most of our instruments come from Arabia: the violin, cello, lute, guitar, oboe, clarinet, organ and so on. It always intrigued me to play in Arabian style. Having once been married for 10 years to and Arab woman did not harm my empathy for the music. This improvisation is free, I never wrote anything down. The end in major is a one time off. I thought: lets look how it sounds. I prefer the minor ending, but the major was recorded; thats how it goes. Improvisation by Georg Mertens performed 21 June 08 in the Cathedral Chamber at Jenolan Caves. Concerts are held every 3rd Saturday of the month. The Allemande from the lute suite 1 BWV996 of J.S.Bach, interpreted by Y.Kertsopoulos on a high tuned guitar and strings, constructed by him.In 1948 A.Segovia introduced the nylon string aesthetic of A.Augustine. The classical and flamenco guitar enjoys this aesthetic for more than sixty years and J.Bream, J.Williams, D.Fampas, G.Miliaresis, the Romero family, C.Parkening, Alirio Diaz, R.Dyens, A.Lagoya, I.Presti, L.Almeida, Evangelos &Liza, N.Mavroudis, V.Boudounis, C.Kotsiolis, K.Grigoreas, G.Mavroidis, Paco de Lucia, P.Pena, C.Montoya, Sabicas, Serranito are only a few of the guitarists that play with great success this aesthetic which has worldwide acceptance today. A.Barrios and H.V.Lobos played with metal strings while D.Prat, A.Lauro, F.Tarrega, R.Montoya played with gut strings. At the time of M.Giuliani, M.Carcassi, L.Legnani, F.Carulli, F.Sor, D.Aguado the guitar was strung with metal, gut and silk strings and had either double courses or single strings. Also further back in history G.Sanz, Bermudo, Brescianello played the guitar in higher pitched tunings and the triple strung guitarra battente was popular mainly in Italy. Y.Kertsopoulos introduced in 1994 the Kertsopoulos Aesthetics which as a multiplex open architecture scheme provide the possibility of reviving and realizing the many faces of the guitar's aesthetics, as they have been recorded in history. Among many guitarists that play the aesthetics Smaro Gregoriadou has made many succesful first world presentations of different aspects of aesthetic styles in guitar interpretation. [ More Detail ]

Autumn Journey is a filmed portrait of the life and work of the great German baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of the great musical giants of the 20th century. Along with Richter, Oistrakh, Menuhin, Rostropovich, Casals and Callas, he represents a truly golden era of great artists, not only remembered for their extraordinary live performances, but whose musicianship has also left to the world an unrivalled legacy of recordings.Filmed on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Fischer-Dieskau reveals for the first time many of the secrets of his outstanding success. The conversation which provides the framework to this portrait, as well as a large number of musical extracts, foster a deeper understanding of the art of this great musician singer, and the character of the man hidden behind the imposing public figure. In typically modest style this prolific singer talks about his life, the remarkable influences which have guided his career, musical interpretation, his colleagues, and his attitude towards Italian, Russian and French repertoire.Performance extracts include works by Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Brahms, Mahler, Wolf, Bach, Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Reimann, Berg, Henze and Britten.
