Boys of the St. Thomas Choir conducted by Prof. Georg Christoph Biller sing in Leipzig's St. Thomas Church. Halleluja, halleluja.Bach's main place of work in Leipzig was the late gothic Church of St. Thomas, a reconstructed Franciscan church. It is the home of St. Thomas Choir, which Bach led while also carrying out his other duties at St. Thomas. Since 1950, Bach's mortal remains have rested in this church so intrinsically linked with his name. The composition of this motette also dates back to an actual event. Bach wrote this three-part vocal composition - with textual sources in the Bible (Romans 8, 26-28) and in the writings of Martin Luther - for the burial of the rector of St. Thomas's School, Johann Heinrich Ernesti, on 20th October 1729.The Leipzig St. Thomas's Choir is one of the world's leading boys' choirs, dedicated to the great Johann Sebastian Bach tradition. Under the St. Thomas's conductor Prof. Georg Christoph Biller, the choir's performance has strenghtened steadily, as demonstrated in internationally acclaimed concerts and CD productions. Johann Sebastian BachWeihnachtsoratorium, BWV 248/3 "Schließe, mein Herze, dies selige Wunder"In this recording:Michael Chance w/Orchestre du Collegium Vocale, Ghent/Ph. Herreweghe (1989)Weihnachtsoratorium, BWV 248 (The Christmas Oratorio) is a musical work by Johann Sebastian Bach celebrating the Christmas season. It consists of various chorales, arias and cantatas. It was written in 1734, although much of the music was recycled from the composer's earlier music, including three secular cantatas written in the same year (BWV 213, 214 and 215), a lost church cantata BWV 248a and the lost St. Mark Passion. It is likely that the text was written by Picander. It is in six parts, each part being a cantata intended for performance on one of the Twelve Days of Christmas (although the work is nowadays often performed as a whole). It is narrated by a Tenor Evangelist, and also makes extensive use of Lutheran hymns. Translation:Enclose, my heart, this blessed miracleFirmly within your faith!Let this miracle, these divine deedsEver serve to strengthenYour weak faith!
