Album: Gulag Orkestar 2006 A great alternative-folk album that came out of left-field in the 2006 music scene mixing eastern european folk music, lo-fi, neo-psychedelic, and indie rock. It's hard to compare Zach Condon's (Beirut) music to anything else out there (which is a good thing), except maybe Denver's Devotchka. His musical style combines the best of indie pop's melodic and whimsical textures and the multi-instrumentalism of American and European folk music in order to make an otherwise obscure sound more palatable. Even though he's only been around for a few years, I can see him developing into an even better musician. Just picture yourself waltzing with the love of your life on a bright and sunny day in the middle of quaint little rural town in France or Italy without a care in the world, band playing music in the street, and maybe you'll get the feel of this album.Kudos to Ba Da Bing! for releasing this music.Go buy the rest of his albums too!My personal favorites are Scenic World Prenzlauerberg Postcards from Italy [ More Detail ]

The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin, Germany. It is located between the Pariser Platz and the Platz des 18. März and is the only remaining gate of a series through which one formerly entered Berlin. One block to its north lies the Reichstag. It constitutes the monumental termination of Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden (lime) trees which led directly to the royal residence. It was commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm II as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791.The Brandenburg Gate consists of twelve Doric columns, six to each side, forming five roadways; citizens originally were allowed to use only the outer two. Atop the gate is the Quadriga, with Viktoria, the goddess of victory driving the Quadriga. The gate is 26.00 metres (65 ft) high, 65.50 metres (213 ft) wide, and 11.00 metres (36 ft) thick.The Gate's design is based upon the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Berlin's history of architectural classicism is long: first, Baroque, and then neo-Palladian. The Gate was the first Athens on the River Spree") by architect Karl Gotthard von Langhans. The capital Quadriga was made by Johann Gottfried Schadow.The Brandenburg Gate's design has remained unchanged since its completion, yet it has played different political roles in German history. Marchand fled before the competition could take place, apparently scared off in the face of Bach's great reputation of virtuosity and improvisation.The concerto is well suited throughout to showing off the qualities of a fine harpsichord and the virtuosity of its player, but especially in the lengthy solo 'cadenza' to the first movement. It seems almost certain that Bach, considered a great organ and harpsichord virtuoso, was the harpsichord soloist at the premiere. Scholars have seen in this work the origins of the solo keyboard concerto; indeed it is said to be the first-ever example.An earlier version, BWV 1050a, has innumerable small differences from its later cousin, but only two main ones: there is no part for cello, and there is a shorter and less elaborate harpsichord cadenza in the first movement.
