16mm film, 2008Screened at UAL's Sharp Shorts '08.Dir. Lester Lyons-HookhamWith: Kehinde OmisoreTaiwo OmisoreJake TobinThe film was setup to explore perceptions of racism; through making it I aimed to find a standing or statement regarding artworks dealing with cultural and racial stereotypes. However, through this process, its clear that forming a concrete position on the matter is futile; my film mostly highlights the complexity of the topic. It is important to note that this piece was entirely unscripted; the scene was setup, the actors were asked if one would "makeup" the other, and they were asked to discuss between themselves what their thoughts on the process were. What resulted was a conversation which was natural, much more fluid, and had greater cultural references (both obvious and nuanced) than could have been scripted. The process of scripting would have created false dialogue, purporting to be from a particular culture, when in fact based merely on a series of perceptions of that culture. Within this piece are many references to aspects of culture and cultural stereotypes; nods to both black and white. In some cases, such as the mention of white people having "small penises", these stereotypes are played to. At one point a trip to the "arcade, then Nando's" is mentioned in a phone conversation. This could be seen in a negative way; their lines are conforming to the black stereotype of "liking fried chicken". However, this was a real telephone conversation, unscripted and non-improvised; this line could have easily been edited out for fear of building up a stereotype; but removing it would have also censored part of the subject's true personality. When singing; Kehinde refers to Vanessa Carlton, a singer who is also referenced in a scene from the Hollywood major-release "White Chicks"; which follows two black men dressing up as white women. Though a somewhat immature reference, it's a powerful indication of him placing their activity within his own cultural context. The actors make other subtler references to black stereotypes and black history within their conversation; but to deconstruct all of them in a text such as this would be undermining, both to their intellect and their ability to communicate contextual and cultural references without the aid or deconstruction from a white "interpreter". I prefer to allow the viewer to read into these individually, and construct their own ideas or assumptions on the piece. The act of subtitling has also become significant. Where it was initially a practical way of getting round sometimes incomprehensible, mumbled lines; it has now become (a somewhat negative) means translating black culture/language for a wider (namely white) audience. Even though this was a practical decision, it still, to some degree could be seen as undermining the voice of the twins.Conversely; the subtitles bring the content of their conversation to the forefront of the piece; visuals, and their activity become secondary. What they have to say about what they are doing is now more important than what they are actually doing. In the film, by asking if "white people have it on their lips" the actors have deconstructed skin colour and race to a cosmetic level. These aspects of personality have become only an application. [ More Detail ]

This is an UNOFFICIAL Biotherm (Men's skin-care product) commercial that I did for a marketing project:The following is the second in our series of three commercials. It is entitled "15-Love". It is done in black and white with Frank Sinatra's song, "Under my Skin" done by Michael Buble, to give our product a first-class, premium image and to play on the emotion of love. We chose Michael Buble's version because we are targeting a more youthful audience. We would like to point out that we use no voiceovers in this commercial because we want the viewer to focus on what's happening. In addition, our motto "More than just your skin" further reinforces the desired perception of our product as having benefit to more than the skin. We use a white background to symbolize cleanliness, and we flash the products as well as the logos of Biotherm and L'oreal so the viewer associates us with the cosmetic and skin-care giant.
