Piano Concerto No. 2, 1st MovementComposer: Elena Kats-Chernin (1957- )Performers: Ian Munro (piano) &Tasmanian Symphony OrchestraConductor: Ola RudnerElena Kats-Chernin (born 4 November 1957) is a Soviet-born Australian composer.She was born in Tashkent (now the capital of independent Uzbekistan — but then, part of the Soviet Union), and emigrated to Australia in 1975. She studied composition with Richard Toop, and later with Helmut Lachenmann in Germany. While in Europe she became active in theatre and ballet, composing for state theatres in Berlin, Vienna, Hamburg and Bochum. In 1993 she wrote Clocks for the Ensemble Modern. It has since been performed around the world.Since returning to Australia in 1994, Kats-Chernin has written three operas, two piano concertos and compositions for many performers and ensembles, including The Song Company, the Sydney Alpha Ensemble, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Chamber Made Opera, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony. She was also commissioned to write a piece, Page Turn, for the 2000 Sydney International Piano Competition. Her music was featured at the opening ceremonies of both the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup.She also wrote three silent film soundtracks for a co-production between German/French TV channels ZDF/ARTE: Victor Sjöström's Korkarlen (Phantom Chariot), Billy Wilder and Robert Siodmak's People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag), and G.W. Pabst's Crisis.Kats-Chernin's other works include Charleston Noir for solo piano, Rockhampton Garden Symphonies with Mark Svendsen for solo voices, mixed choirs and orchestra, and Wild Swans, a collaboration with choreographer Meryl Tankard. She has won numerous music composition prizes in Australia, and her pieces are regularly broadcast on ABC Classic FM radio.Performances of Kats-Chernin's music is available on several commercially-released recordings. One album is Chamber of Horrors, released in August 2006 by Tall Poppies Records. Chamber of Horrors includes Charleston Noir, for four basses; Chamber of Horrors, for harp (1995), played by Alice Giles; Still Life, for viola and piano (2001); Gypsy Ramble, for viola, cello and piano (1996); Wild Rice, for cello (1996); and Velvet Revolution, for horn, violin and piano (1999).Kats-Chernin's Eliza Aria from her score for the Ballet Wild Swans (ABC Classics), is used in Lloyds TSB's 2007 television advertisements. The chorus was originally about the huge gap in my life cos my dad was never around ( 5,ooo miles away most of the time !)The middle 8 was an attempt to create a Psychedelic cross between "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "McArthur Park " (Old ,Old tunes, but classic moods and themes)Theres a string quartet on the fade out ( 4 girls on 2 violins, viola and cello !) They see their church leaders as royalty, trusting them blindly. A young woman, Hester Prynne, is a newcomer to town. Little is known of her past, save for her marriage to a man serving a long prison sentence. She spends many of her hours alone in nature where she feels closest to God, a practice strange to everyone except for the Reverend Dimmsdale who is fascinated by the unusual purity of her spiritual devotion. Secretly, the two fall in love through their mutual devotion to God.The town goes into an uproar when Hester gives birth to a daughter, Pearl, and puts her on trial for adultery. When Hester will not confess to Pearl's paternity, she is condemned to bear a scarlet 'A' on her chest for the rest of her life. During her public sentencing, her husband, Roger Chillingworth, recently released from prison, arrives in town. Swearing Hester to secrecy about his identity, he vows to reveal and destroy Pearl's father at all costs.Lacking the strength to admit to his sins, Dimmsdale's punishment is self inflicted with a guilt strong enough to cause him to fall ill. Chillingworth, masquerading as a healer, offers guidance and 'medication' that only serves to further weaken his mental state. In the throws of hallucination, he meets Hester with Pearl for the first time. Hester is greatly disturbed by the condition of her former lover, decides that the time has come to escape the 'New World" and persuades him to leave with them.Over time Reverend Dimmsdale has become quite a celebrity, widely revered for delivering sermons with the passion and charisma of a man possessed. That coming Sunday marks the fulfillment of his life goal, a sermon that will be broadcast throughout the "New World." The couple decide to leave immediately after.In delivering the greatest sermon of his life, his physical condition becomes obvious.
