Was fiddling around playing bass infront of the computer, decided to give a go at the cello suite. Here it is... Now I want to play it seriously and make a good recording of it... playing this relaxes me, its been a crazy week... [ More Detail ]
When I decided I'd learn the Prelude from Bach's 1st Cello Suite, I really didn't think I could make it sound anywhere close to as good as it sounds on the cello. And now that I'm finished with it... I know that I was thinking correctly. : ) However, this is one of my favourite solo pieces and I was really excited about arranging it for the bass. It probably isn't 'classical' in any way, but I really enjoy playing it. Hope you enjoy it as well!Notes about how my bass is set up: If you go to my YouTube channel, you will see all the information about my bass' strings, which are called piccolo strings. Despite the thinness of the strings, I still couldn't tune it to exact cello tuning, which is C G D A (my top string would probable break if I tried to tune it past G#). But I really wanted to tune it in fifths, which is how a cello is tuned (rather than standard bass fourths). So I tuned it as high as I could in fifths - Bb F C G. However, my hand was in serious pain after trying to play this piece lower down on the neck, where it is played on the cello. Therefore, I put a capo on the 10th fret. I thought it sounded different and kind of cool higher up. The capo changed my tuning to G# Eb Bb F. So now, weirdly, I'm playing this piece in Eb major. Well, I hope people don't look to hard on this interpretation - because that's all it is! [ More Detail ]

This is my attempt at trying to produce a bowed cello sound on fretless bass with an E-Bow for our version of Ushers Well. It's very tricky! To get a reasonable input level to the desk the input was turned well up making every finger movement on the fretboard an audible clunk. Like walking on eggshells. Next time I'll hire a proper cello. What I'm trying to do, is create inexpensive instruments that I can donate to schools in the inner city Los Angeles. I want to give kids who do not have enough money to buy an instrument an opportunity to create music. That is why I'm figuring out ways to use common hardware store materials to build instruments at low cost. So far I've designed an acoustic violin, guitar, and ukulele using Gatorade bottles as acoustic resonator, and using piezo transducers from radio shack to electrify the larger bass instruments. I plan on creating an orchestral strings section with the use of ABS plastic piping for the body, shock cord and fishing line for strings, and a $2.00 piezo pickups for amplification. Each instrument costs 30 to 60 dollars depending on the instrument. If you plan on making the instrument for recreation only, then the plan's cost $20.00 and that money goes directly to the cause. If you plan on making the instruments to help me out with labor, the $20.00 will be refunded once you send the instrument to me . If you wish to aid in my efforts to give kids an opportunity to make music you can either donate through paypal to: or make the instruments yourself and send them to me.The plans have step by step picture illustrations as well as measurements, close up sketches, and lists of both materials and tools needed to create these wonderful instruments.
