CDSL: Year II - Coleridge = Let's Bring It All Back Thumbs list

!~Please read first before you watch~!This came out a bit bad... the photos are repeated(I lack of them), And in the credits Jerome's name is only "de Guzma" and no "N" at the end. I guess it's like that because that rolling credits style has a character Limit, that's why "Jenny Lyn" is only "Jenny". Also, I forgot to resize our teacher's name so the details at the side would fit.I'll remake this sometime. Started this last thursday out of boredom and finished it last night.Anyway, this is about Year II Coleridge of CDSL during the Nutrition Month Celebration/Winnie Roast. That's the music 'cause that's what we danced for our intermission number. [ More Detail ]

Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Thumbs list

A recital of extracts from the following poem: "Kubla Khan, or a Vision in a Dream. A Fragment." a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The title refers to the Mongol and Chinese emperor Kublai Khan of the Yuan dynasty. The poem was written in 1797, first published in 1816. Xanadu refers to Shangdu, the summer palace of Kublai Khan. The full text of the poem is below, with the extracts included in the video enclosed in quotation marks "":"In Xanadu did Kubla KhanA stately pleasure-dome decree :Where Alph, the sacred river, ranThrough caverns measureless to manDown to a sunless sea.So twice five miles of fertile groundWith walls and towers were girdled round :And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;And here were forests ancient as the hills,Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. But oh ! that deep romantic chasm which slantedDown the green hill athwart a cedarn cover !A savage place !" as holy and enchantedAs e'er beneath a waning moon was hauntedBy woman wailing for her demon-lover !"And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,A mighty fountain momently was forced :Amid whose swift half-intermitted burstHuge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,"Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail :And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and everIt flung up momently the sacred river.Five miles meandering with a mazy motionThrough wood and dale the sacred river ran,Then reached the caverns measureless to man,And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean :"And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from farAncestral voices prophesying war !"The shadow of the dome of pleasureFloated midway on the waves ;Where was heard the mingled measureFrom the fountain and the caves."It was a miracle of rare device,A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice ! "A damsel with a dulcimerIn a vision once I saw :It was an Abyssinian maid,And on her dulcimer she played,Singing of Mount Abora.Could I revive within meHer symphony and song,To such a deep delight 'twould win me,That with music loud and long,I would build that dome in air,That sunny dome ! those caves of ice !And all who heard should see them there,And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !His flashing eyes, his floating hair !Weave a circle round him thrice,And close your eyes with holy dread,For he on honey-dew hath fed,And drunk the milk of Paradise. [ More Detail ]

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: Zarifa , Op. 19 No. 2 Thumbs list

The British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) had a West African father, but there is little exoticism in his set of '2 Moorish Tone Pictures' from which this piece comes. As in most of his piano music, the dominant influence is that of Dvorak. The inspiration behind this set seems to be the Spanish romance 'The Bridal of Andalla', made popular in Britain by the translation of John G. Lockhart (1794-1854): 'Rise up, rise up, Xarifa! lay your golden cushion down; Rise up! come to the window, and gaze with all the town'.... In the ballad, Xarifa is exhorted to go to her window to see the gallant cavalier Andalla come to claim his bride. In truth, she holds back, as she is (unknown to her companions) his jilted 'ex'. The full ballad can be read on:http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/familiar-songs/familiar-songs%20-%200443.htm--------------------------------------Played by Phillip Searhttp://www.psear.co.uk [ More Detail ]

Coleridge, To Nature Thumbs list

It may indeed be phantasy, when IEssay to draw from all created thingsDeep, heartfelt, inward joy that closely clings ;And trace in leaves and flowers that round me lieLessons of love and earnest piety. So let it be ; and if the wide world ringsIn mock of this belief, it bringsNor fear, nor grief, nor vain perplexity. So will I build my altar in the fields,And the blue sky my fretted dome shall be,And the sweet fragrance that the wild flower yieldsShall be the incense I will yield to Thee,Thee only God ! and thou shalt not despiseEven me, the priest of this poor sacrificeSamuel Taylor Coleridge1820 [ More Detail ]

Frost at Midnight -Samuel Taylor Coleridge Thumbs list

Frost at Midnight by Samuel Taylor Coleridgepublished 1798read by Nigel PlanerThe Frost performs its secret ministry,Unhelped by any wind. The owlet's cryCame loud--and hark, again ! loud as before. The inmates of my cottage, all at rest,Have left me to that solitude, which suitsAbstruser musings : save that at my sideMy cradled infant slumbers peacefully.'Tis calm indeed ! so calm, that it disturbsAnd vexes meditation with its strangeAnd extreme silentness. Sea, hill, and wood,This populous village ! Sea, and hill, and wood,With all the numberless goings-on of life,Inaudible as dreams ! the thin blue flameLies on my low-burnt fire, and quivers not ;Only that film, which fluttered on the grate,Still flutters there, the sole unquiet thing.Methinks, its motion in this hush of natureGives it dim sympathies with me who live,Making it a companionable form,Whose puny flaps and freaks the idling SpiritBy its own moods interprets, every whereEcho or mirror seeking of itself,And makes a toy of Thought. But O ! how oft,How oft, at school, with most believing mind,Presageful, have I gazed upon the bars,To watch that fluttering stranger ! and as oftWith unclosed lids, already had I dreamtOf my sweet birth-place, and the old church-tower,Whose bells, the poor man's only music, rangFrom morn to evening, all the hot Fair-day,So sweetly, that they stirred and haunted meWith a wild pleasure, falling on mine earMost like articulate sounds of things to come !So gazed I, till the soothing things, I dreamt,Lulled me to sleep, and sleep prolonged my dreams !And so I brooded all the following morn,Awed by the stern preceptor's face, mine eyeFixed with mock study on my swimming book :Save if the door half opened, and I snatchedA hasty glance, and still my heart leaped up,For still I hoped to see the stranger's face,Townsman, or aunt, or sister more beloved,My play-mate when we both were clothed alike !Dear Babe, that sleepest cradled by my side,Whose gentle breathings, heard in this deep calm,Fill up the intersperséd vacanciesAnd momentary pauses of the thought !My babe so beautiful ! it thrills my heartWith tender gladness, thus to look at thee,And think that thou shalt learn far other lore,And in far other scenes ! For I was rearedIn the great city, pent 'mid cloisters dim,And saw nought lovely but the sky and stars. But thou, my babe ! shalt wander like a breezeBy lakes and sandy shores, beneath the cragsOf ancient mountain, and beneath the clouds,Which image in their bulk both lakes and shoresAnd mountain crags : so shalt thou see and hearThe lovely shapes and sounds intelligibleOf that eternal language, which thy GodUtters, who from eternity doth teachHimself in all, and all things in himself.Great universal Teacher ! he shall mouldThy spirit, and by giving make it ask. Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee,Whether the summer clothe the general earthWith greenness, or the redbreast sit and singBetwixt the tufts of snow on the bare branchOf mossy apple-tree, while the nigh thatchSmokes in the sun-thaw ; whether the eave-drops fallHeard only in the trances of the blast,Or if the secret ministry of frostShall hang them up in silent icicles,Quietly shining to the quiet Moon.Audio production by Robert Nichol AudioProductionsLondonall rights reserved [ More Detail ]

Kubla Khan - Samuel Taylor Coleridge Thumbs list

Can you create a paradise by building material things? Or, how about creating paradise in your imagination? This was written in 1797 (possibly) and first published in 1816.Coleridge's note, published with the poem is as follows: "The following fragment is here published at the request of a poet of great and deserved celebrity [Lord Byron], and, as far as the Author's own opinions are concerned, rather as a psychological curiosity, than on the ground of any supposed poetic merits. In the summer of the year 1797, the Author, then in ill health, had retired to a lonely farm-house between Porlock and Linton, on the Exmoor confines of Somerset and Devonshire. In consequence of a slight indisposition, an anodyne had been prescribed, from the effects of which he fell asleep in his chair at the moment that he was reading the following sentence, or words of the same substance, in Purchas's Pilgrimage: ``Here the Khan Kubla commanded a palace to be built, and a stately garden thereunto. And thus ten miles of fertile ground were inclosed with a wall.'' The Author continued for about three hours in a profound sleep, at least of the external senses, during which time he has the most vivid confidence, that he could not have composed less than from two to three hundred lines; if that indeed can be called composition in which all the images rose up before him as things, with a parallel production of the correspondent expressions, without any sensation or consciousness of effort. On awakening he appeared to himself to have a distinct recollection of the whole, and taking his pen, ink, and paper, instantly and eagerly wrote down the lines that are here preserved.
