M.Sargent/Dohnányi "Suite romantique" (for orchestra)Part2-5 Thumbs list

================================Ernst von Dohnányi Suite for orchestra in F sharp minor ("Suite romantique"), Op.19 1. Andante con variazioni (Andante con moto) Parts1&2-52. Scherzo (Allegretto vivace) Parts3-53. Romanza (Andante poco moto) Parts4-54. Rondo (Allegro vivace) Part5-5The Royal Philharmonic Orches6tra/Malcolm Sargent================================Related information:Ernst von Dohnányi continued:A whispering campaign against him was promoted by the new Communist government of Hungary, to the point where he found it necessary to leave. He was not able to revive his career as a concert pianist, but continued to compose, and became interested in American folk music; his last orchestral work, in 1953, is entitled American Rhapsody. This piece was written for the sesquicentennial of Ohio University and includes folk material such as On Top of Old Smokey and I am a Poor, Wayfaring Stranger. Dohnányi also found a teaching position for ten years at the Florida State University School of Music in Tallahassee, whose music library holds a large archive of Dohnányi's papers, manuscripts, and related materials. An International Ernst von Dohnányi Festival was held there in 2002.His last public performance, on January 30, 1960, was at Florida State University, conducting the university orchestra in a performance of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 with his doctoral student, Edward R. Thaden, as soloist. Following this performance, Dohnányi traveled to New York City to record some Beethoven piano sonatas, as well as other works, on stereo LP discs. He had previously recorded a Mozart concerto, his own Variations on a Nursery Tune, the second movement of his Ruralia Hungarica (Gypsy Andante), and a few solo works (but no Beethoven sonatas) on 78 rpm and various works, including Beethoven's Tempest Sonata, on early mono LP discs. He died ten days later, February 9, 1960, of pneumonia in New York City. The BBC issued an LP recording taken from one of his last concerts with sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert, now considered one of the glories of the heritage of Romantic pianism. The last three books entitled Daily Finger Exercises for the Advanced Pianist in Three Volumes by Ernst Von Dohnanyi was published by Mills Music, Inc. in 1962.CompositionsDohnányi's compositional style was eclectic. Although he drew upon influences from Hungarian folk music, he is not considered a nationalist composer like Béla Bartók or Zoltán Kodály. Dohnányi's approach is deeply rooted in the strongest traditions of European classical music, and particularly bears the imprint of Johannes Brahms. However, he also absorbed diverse other influences, including that of American folk music (see above) and jazz.OrchestralSymphony in F major (1896, unpublished) Symphony No. 1 in D minor, op. 9 (1901) Suite in F-sharp minor, op. 19 (1909) Ünnepi nyitány (Festival Overture), op. 31 (1923) Ruralia Hungarica (based on Hungarian folk tunes), op. 32b (1924) Szimfonikus percek (Symphonic Minutes), op. 36 (1933) Symphony No. 2 in E major, op. 40 (1945, revised 1954-7) [1] American Rhapsody, op. 47 (1953) Solo instrument and orchestraPiano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, op. 5 (1898) (the opening theme was inspired by Brahms' Symphony No. 1) Konzertstück (Concertpiece) in D major for cello and orchestra, op. 12 (1904) Variationen über ein Kinderlied (Variations on a Nursery Tune) for piano and orchestra, op. 25 (1914) Violin Concerto No. 1 in D minor, op. 27 (1915) Piano Concerto No. 2 in B minor, op. 42 (1947) Violin Concerto No. 2 in C minor, op. 43 (1950) Concertino for harp and chamber orchestra, op. 45 (1952) Chamber and InstrumentalPiano Quintet No. 1 in C minor, op. 1 (1895) String Quartet No. 1 in A major, op. 7 (1899) Sonata in B-flat minor for cello and piano, op. 8 (1899) Serenade in C major for string trio, op. 10 (1902) String Quartet No. 2 in D-flat major, op. 15 (1906) Sonata in C-sharp minor for violin and piano, op. 21 (1912) Piano Quintet No. 2 in E-flat minor, op. 26 (1914) String Quartet No. 3 in A minor, op. 33 (1926) Sextet in C for piano, strings and winds, op. 37 (1935) Aria for flute and piano, op 48, no. 1 (1958) Passacaglia for solo flute, op. 48, no. 2 (1959) PianoFour Pieces, op. 2 (1897, pub. 1905) Waltzes for four hands, op. 3 (1897) Variations and Fugue on a Theme of EG, op. 4 (1897) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ern%C5%91_Dohn%C3%A1nyi================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Freddy Martin &His Orchestra - Say When Thumbs list

I'm very happy to present this exquisite rendition in a recording (courtesy of phredl) by Freddy Martin &His Orchestra. Martin led his own band while he was in high school, then played in various local bands. After working on a ships band, Martin joined the Mason-Dixon band, then joined Arnold Johnson and Jack Albin. It was with Albin's "Hotel Pennsylvania Music" that he made his first recordings, for Columbia's Velvet Tone label in 1930. After a couple of years, his skill began attracting other musicians. One such musician was Guy Lombardo, who would remain friends with Martin throughout his life. There is a story about Lombardo and Martin. After graduation from high school, Martin accepted a job at the H.N. White musical instrument company. When Lombardo was playing in Cleveland, Martin tried giving Lombardo some saxophones, which proved unsuccessful. Fortunately, Lombardo did get to hear Freddy's band. One night, when Guy could not do a certain date, he suggested that Freddy's band could fill in for him. The band did very well and that's how Martin's career really got started. But the band broke up and he did not form a permanent band until 1931 at the Bossert Hotel in Brooklyn. At the Bossert Marine Room, Freddy pioneered the "Tenor Band" style that swept the sweet-music industry. With his own tenor sax as melodic lead, Martin fronted an all-tenor sax section with just two brasses and a violin trio plus rhythm. The rich, lilting style quickly spawned imitators in hotels and ballrooms nationwide. "Tenor bands", usually with just the three tenors and one trumpet, could occasionally be found playing for older dancers well into the 1980s. The Martin band recorded first for Columbia Records in 1932. As the company was broke and signing no new contracts, the band switched to Brunswick Records after one session and remained with that label till 1938. Afterwards Martin appeared on RCA's Bluebird and Victor Records. The band also recorded pseudonymously in the early '30s, backing singers such as Will Osborne. Martin took his band into many prestigious hotels, including the Roosevelt Grill in New York City and the Ambassador in Los Angeles. A fixture on radio, his sponsored shows included NBC's Maybelline Penthouse Serenade of 1937. But Martin's real success came in 1941 with an arrangement from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's B-flat piano concerto. Although his playing has been admired by so many jazz musicians, Freddy Martin never tried to be a jazz musician. Martin always led a sweet styled band. Unlike most sweet bands that just played dull music, Martin's band turned out to be one of the most musical and most melodic of all the typical hotel-room sweet bands. Martin also had a good ear for singers. At one time or another, Martin employed Merv Griffin, Buddy Clark, Terry Shand (also a pianist), Elmer Feldkamp (also a saxophonist, but who is singing the wonderful vocal here), Stuart Wade (his most impressive male singer), Eddie Stone (also a violinist), and many others. Helen Ward was a singer for Martin just before she joined Benny Goodman's new band. Ironically, as far as I know of, she was the only female singer to have appeared with Martin's band, recording two sides of a 78 in early 1934 with Freddy using the alias "Ed Loyd." In the 1950s and 1960s, Martin continued to perform on the radio and also appeared on TV. Untroubled by changing musical tastes, he continued to work at major venues and was musical director for Elvis Presley's first appearance in Las Vegas. Still in demand for hotel work, Martin entered the 1970s with an engagement at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. In the early 1970s, he was part of two long TV series of one-nighters that was known as The Big Band Cavalcade. Among the other performers on the show were Margaret Whiting, Bob Crosby, Frankie Carle, Buddy Morrow, Art Mooney and George Shearing. When the tours ended, Martin returned to the West Coast. In 1977, Martin was asked to lead Guy Lombardo's band when Lombardo was hospitalized with a heart condition. Martin continued leading his band until the early 1980s, although by then, he was semi-retired. Freddy Martin died in 1983. This fabulousl record was cut for Brunswick in 1934. [ More Detail ]

Ewa Bandrowska-Turska: Polish soprano - Karol Szymanowski Thumbs list

Born in 1882 Karol Szymanowski was one of the truly outstanding composers of the first half of the 20th Century. He was certainly the greatest and most influential Polish composer of that period. His works included four symphonies, two violin concertos, the operas„Hagith" „King Roger", the ballet-pantomime „Harnasie", the oratorio „Stabat Mater", as well as numerous piano, violin, vocal and choral compositions. His career as a composer can most easily be envisaged as being in three very distinct phases. Szymanowski's early works before the First World War display a strong affinity with the work of Fryderyk Chopin, Alexander Skriabin, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. The subsequent period of his development was characterised by a fascination with the Orient and with Mediterranean cultures during which he was clearly influenced by the French impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. This period produced many of his best known and loved compositions. From 1921 his music became increasingly distinctive as he drew upon Polish folk themes, especially from the Podhale mountain region around Zakopane, to define a specifically Polish music. This period produced much of his very greatest work. Afflicted by disease and financial concerns, Szymanowski effectively ceased to compose from 1934. He died in 1937 at the age of 57 leaving behind an outstanding collection of works that are today more loved, and more widely performed and recorded than ever before. One if his creations including homoerotic threads was opera „King Roger", composed within 1918-1924 and premiered in Warsaw, 1926. The scene of the drama is laid in the XII century Kingdom of Sicily, ruled by King Roger the 2nd, from a Norman line of kings..............................Ewa Bandrowska-Turska (1894 -1979), one of the most talented and versatile Polish soprano singers; she was a niece of the great Polish singer, Aleksander Bandrowski. First was taught by the singer Helena Zboińska-Ruszkowska who after six month lectures stated that Ewa should had already gone her own way.Her debut took place In 1919, soon she was performing in „Faustus" in the Warsaw Opera, being a soloist of the scene. Began to make her concerts outside Poland, in Germany, Austria and mainly France where she was invited by the group „jeunes musiciens polonais". Soon it turned out that Bandrowska-Turska had a special talent and predispositions for a modern and contemporary repertoire; started to sing songs by Maurice Ravel and Albert Roussel, having been accompanied by those composers. In Poland, she became one of the first interpreters of compositions made by Karol Szymanowski; from these times the presentrecording dates. She sang in Opéra Comique, Paris, Ostenda, Brussels, Nicea, various places in Italy, New York and Chicago. Her recitals were received with great enthusiasms in Soviet Russia, she became an important ambassador of Polish music and culture. She performed for the last time on the Warsaw Opera stage in 1960, died in 1979.The present record, from my collection, shows Bandrowska-Turska's vocal talent for the first time recorded in electrical system for the Polish Odeon in 1930:Aria of Roxana"King Roger"Symphony OrchesterConducted by Dr Weissmann 1930Some audio traces of the steel needle once having been used, can be unfortunately heard. Bob Haring &His Orchestra - Deep Night Thumbs list

Originally I got a request for this song interpreted by Rudy Vallée. However, since this version has already been uploaded by pax41, I refer to his excellent channel. Instead I upload a lovely version by Bob Haring, one of my favorite bandleaders. Although very prolific, he was very discreet, working away from the footlight. Finally I found a short biography, which I gladly include here. Bob Haring was born in Montclair, New Jersey on August 21, 1896.He attended both the University of Washington and the Seattle Conservatory of Music. He made his first recording as a bandleader for the Cameo label in 1922, and continued to record through 1931. He recorded under many different names, including the Lincoln Dance Orchestra, the Cameo Dance Orchestra, The Caroliners, the Colonial Club Orchestra, the Society Night Club Orchestra, the Dixie Daisies, The Detroiters, The Georgians and The Chicagoans. He worked as a radio conductor in the thirties, including a short job in 1936 on the Lucky Strike Hit Parade. He got away from performing in the late thirties, and eventually became musical editor at a publishing company. He was a composer as well as a bandleader, having written Dawn of Tomorrow; Concerto for Two; Fanny Tinkle and My Midnight Star. The present recording was made for Brunswick on February 11th, 1929. The excellent vocal is by Harold "Scrappy" Lambert. [ More Detail ]

To Grieg's place-100 years anniversary by Franco Tenelli Thumbs list

My footage on Grieg's life and musicGrieg was born in Bergen, Norway on 15 June 1843. His ancestors were Scottish; the original family name was spelt "Greig". After the Battle of Culloden in 1746, his great-grandfather travelled widely, settling in Norway around 1770, and establishing business interests in Bergen. Grieg was raised in a musical home. His mother, Gesine, became his first piano teacher. He studied in several schools including Tank's School, and often brought in examples of his music to his class. The children were fascinated by it, but the teachers regarded it as inferior. He was known as a lazy pupil. In the summer of 1858, Grieg met the eminent Norwegian violinist Ole Bull, who was a friend of the family, and whose brother was married to Grieg's aunt. Bull noticed the 15-year-old boy's talent and persuaded his parents to send him to further develop his talents at the Leipzig Conservatory, then directed by Ignaz Moscheles.Grieg enrolled in the conservatory, concentrating on the piano, and enjoyed the numerous concerts and recitals given in Leipzig. He disliked the discipline of the conservatory course of study, yet he still achieved very good grades in most areas, the exception being the organ, which was mandatory for piano students at the time. In the spring of 1860, he survived a life-threatening lung disease. The following year he made his debut as a concert pianist, in Karlshamn, Sweden. In 1862, he finished his studies in Leipzig, and held his first concert in his home town of Bergen, where his programme included Beethoven's Pathétique sonata. (Grieg's own recording of his Piano Sonata, made late in his life, shows he was an excellent pianist). In 1863, Grieg went to Copenhagen, Denmark, and stayed there for three years. He met the Danish composers J. P. E. Hartmann, and Niels Gade. He also met his fellow Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak (composer of the Norwegian national anthem), who became a good friend and source of great inspiration. Nordraak died shortly after, and Grieg composed a funeral march in his honor. Grieg had close ties with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (Harmonien) and was Music Director of the orchestra from 1880--1882.On 11 June 1867, Grieg married his first cousin, Nina Hagerup. The next year their only child, Alexandra, was born. The following summer, Grieg wrote his Piano Concerto in A minor while on holiday in Denmark. Edmund Neupert gave the concerto its premiere performance on 3 April 1869 in the Casino Theater in Copenhagen. Grieg himself was unable to be there due to commitments conducting in Christiania (as Oslo was then named). In 1868, Franz Liszt, who up to that time had not met Grieg, wrote a testimonial for him to the Norwegian Ministry of Education, which led to Grieg obtaining a travel grant. The two finally met in Rome in 1870. On Grieg's first visit, the two went over Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 1, which pleased Liszt greatly. On the second visit, in April, Grieg brought with him the manuscript of his Piano Concerto, which Liszt proceeded to sightread (including the orchestral arrangement). Liszt's rendition greatly impressed his audience, although Grieg gently pointed out to him that he played the first movement too quickly. Liszt also gave Grieg some advice on orchestration, (e.g. to give the melody of the second theme in the first movement to a solo trumpet).Grieg's tombIn the summer of 1869, Grieg's daughter Alexandra became ill and died, at the age of 13 months. In 1876, Grieg created incidental music for the premiere of Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, at the request of the author. Many of the pieces from this work became very popular in the form of orchestral suites or piano and piano-duet arrangements. In 1888, Grieg met Tchaikovsky in Leipzig. Grieg was later struck by the sadness in Tchaikovsky.[1] Tchaikovsky thought very highly of Grieg's music, praising its beauty, originality and warmth.[2]Grieg's later life brought him fame but not wealth.[citation needed] The Norwegian government awarded him a pension. In the spring 1903, Grieg made nine early one-sided 78-rpm recordings of his piano music in Paris; all of these historic discs have been reissued on both LPs and CDs and, despite limited fidelity, show his artistry as a pianist. Grieg also made live-recording player piano music rolls for the Welte "Mignon" system, all of which survive today and can be heard.Edvard Grieg died in the autumn of 1907, aged 64, after a long period of illness. His final words were "Well, if it must be so". The funeral drew between 30,000 and 40,000 people out on the streets of his home town to honour him. Following his wish, his own funeral march for Rikard Nordraak was played in an orchestration by his friend Johan Halvorsen, who had married Grieg's niece. In addition, a funeral march by Frederic Chopin was played. His and his wife's ashes are entombed in a mountain crypt near his house, Troldhaugen. [ More Detail ]

Beethoven Violin Concerto bronislaw gimpel Vox lp 1955 Thumbs list

This 1955 (never issued on CD!!) version of the slow movement is, to my opinion the best recording ever made of this piece. Unfortunately, the first and third movement last 22 and 11 min respectively. Not the ideal youtube format...Bronislaw Gimpel, violin; Bamberger Symphoniker, Heinrich HollreiserI de-clicked and eq-ed the record myself. For three years I have a website, where I post "out-of-copyright" (in the Netherlands)classical lp's and 78rpm's. Sergei Rachmaninov plays his piano concerto No 2 Thumbs list

Rachmaninov was of course the brilliant virtuoso we all know, but as a genious composer he has as well his place in the standard classical repertoire. Here we hear him play the moderato from his second piano concerto. This unique recording with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra directed by Leopold Stokowski was made for RCA in 1929. At request, I'm now uploading the first movement. [ More Detail ]
