Riders In the Sky have been paying tribute (in their own tongue-in-cheek manner) to singing cowboys since 1977. By approximating the old-timey cowpoke sounds of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, the band has gained a large following of Traditional Country enthusiasts, as well as folks who enjoy the Riders' novel approach to Americana. Here we find Ranger Doug and his dudes celebrating the holidays the country way with their ranch-swing roster of standard country songs, Southern-fried Christmas carols and trademark folkie Gospel. "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" is a song with music by George Bruns and lyrics by Tom W. Blackburn. The first recording of the song was made by Bill Hayes, quickly followed by versions by Fess Parker and Tennessee Ernie Ford (recorded February 7, 1955), all in 1955. All three versions made the Billboard charts: Hayes' version made #1 on the weekly chart (from March 26 through April 23, 1955) and #7 for the year, Parker's reached #6 on the weekly charts and #31 for the year, while Ford's peaked at #4 on the weekly country chart and #5 on the weekly pop chart and charted at #37 for the year. The song also reached #1 on the Cash Box charts, from March 26 through May 14, 1955. Over ten million copies of the song were sold. This version is by Riders in the Sky. [ More Detail ]

http://www.thepoliticalcesspool.orgThe Political Cesspool 9/17/07 (TN) FIRST HOUR: DAVY CROCKETT PROFILE - Local attorney Keith Alexander will join James Edwards in the studio this evening as the dynamic duo honor one of Tennessee's favorite sons, Davy Crockett! Be with them as they examine Crockett's life from his childhood, to Congress and ultimately, The Alamo. We'll also be addressing why it's so important to remember the heroes of our People! SECOND HOUR: James Edwards and guest co-host Keith Alexander will be covering various contemporary political issues during the second half of tonight's show.Crockett was most likely born on August 17, 1786 but as to where is disputed, with his birthplace being given as near the Nolichucky River in Greene County, Tennessee, in Limestone Cove, Washington County, North Carolina, in Franklin, Tennessee, or in Hawkins County, Tennessee [1]. His father's ancestors were of Scots-Irish, French Huguenot, and Anglo-Irish descent, while his mother's ancestors appear to have been exclusively English. His paternal great, great grandfather, Antoine Louis de Crocketagne of Montauban, France, emigrated to County Cork, Ireland in later half of the 17th century before moving to Donegal Bay, County Sligo. His son, Joseph Louis Crockett married Sarah Gilbert Stuart whose father hailed from County Donegal in Ulster and whose grandfather came from Scotland. [2]. Joseph and Sarah migrated to New Rochelle, New York in the first decade of the 1700s. Tradition has Davy Crockett's father being born on this family's migrational voyage to America but in fact his great grandfather William David Crockett who is registered as being born in New Rochelle in 1709 [ More Detail ]

Davy Graham rose from the British folk circuit in the early 60s to not only invent the folk guitar instrumental, but progress into world music. Never content, Graham traveled overseas as an innovative approach to his guitar playing, finding inspiration in Indian, Middle Eastern and Morrocon music, to name but a few. He influenced countless musicians and still does to this day. He was simply always ahead of the field and I've put together a few samples of his unique repetoire for your pleasure.(*Some of the albums shown are not necessarily the albums from which the songs feature on) [ More Detail ]
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the flowers are falling.'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow. And I'll be herein sunshine or in shadow.Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy,I love you so.But if you come, and all the flowers are falling. And I am dead, as dead I might well be.You'll come and find the place where I am lying. And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.And I will hear, though soft your tread above me.And all my grave will warmer sweeter be.And you will bend and tell me that you love me.And I shall sleepin peace until you come to me. But if I live, and should you die for Ireland,Let not your dying thoughts be just of me.But say a prayer to God for our dearest Ireland.I know He'll hearand help to set her free. And I will take your pike and place my dearest,And strike a blow, though weak the blow may be.T'will help the cause to which your heart was nearest Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy I love you so." From Riverdance The Show at the Point Theatre in Dublin 1995. Caoineadh Cu Chulainn (Lament)For those that have asked-pronounciation of Caoineadh Cu Chulainn from Erins Web dot com is'Kweena Coo Hulling'Song composed by Bill Whelan.Presented here isDavy Spillane with a lament on the uilleann pipes for Cuchulain, the great Irish hero and leader who fought the sea prior to his death.Cúchulainn /(Irish "Hound of Culann"; also spelled Cú Chulainn, Cú Chulaind, Cúchulain, or Cuchullain) is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. The son of the god Lugh and Deichtine, sister of the king of Ulster, he was originally named Sétanta , but gained his better-known name as a child after he killed Culann's fierce guard-dog in self-defence, and offered to take its place until a replacement could be reared. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge ("The Cattle Raid of Cooley"). It was prophesied that his great deeds would give him everlasting fame, but that his life would be short; one reason he is compared to the Greek hero Achilles. He is known for his terrifying battle frenzy or ríastrad, in which he becomes an unrecognisable monster who knows neither friend nor foe.He fights from his chariot, driven by his loyal charioteer Láeg, and drawn by his horses, Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend.(Wikipedia) [ More Detail ]
Seems Neil Sedaka's best songs were the ones he never sang, and this one is no exception. Performed by Davy Jones of the Monkees, it is one of my favorites. I'm sure you haven't heard this in 35 years, but with Mr. Trashcan, it's 1971 again. [ More Detail ]
