Javanese Gamelan Group 'Kiai Kanjeng' plays 'Imagine' (Lennon) and more!Performance at Radio Netherlands in Hilversum, 15 October 2008. Shot by me with a miniscule handheld Sony Cybershot Camera, that doesn't even offer a zooming option :) The leader of the Group, Emha Ainun Najib, is a well known figure in Indonesia. He's a poet, musician, essayist, artist who preaches tolerance and mutual respect and understanding between people of different cultural and religious backgrounds. With his peaceful message he's touring in the Netherlands for ten days with his group Kiai Kanjeng. The group is invited to Holland by the Dutch Protestant Church Organization PKN. The music played by Kiai Kanjeng bears elements of traditional Javanese and Balinese gamelan in its playing techniques (for instance the interlocking melodic and/or rhythmic parts attributed to different players, some of the rhythms being played, the way melodies are sometimes embellished and of course the muting of subsequent notes after being struck by the hammers of the players), but in fact this music manifests a modified and modernized gamelan sound in evry way: gamelan structures seem to blend easily with Arabian-like melodies and rhythms, with krontjong, dangdut and with western pop andjazz elements. There's a peculiar and often funny switching between traditional singing and pop style singing. The Kiai Kanjeng Gamelan Group uses the western diatonic scale, so we're far removed here from the traditional pentatonic pelog- and/or slendro-tuning. Added to the gamelan are the violin and pop instruments like bass, electric guitar, drums and keyboards. Is this new? No, not really. Experimenting with gamelan sounds happens a lot in Indonesia and seems to co-exist in good balance and harmony with ensembles who stick to tradition. Experimenting with gamelan can show great results, and Kiai Kanjeng sets a very fine example of how a gamelan orchestra can be used in many different musical ways.Happy Listening! [ More Detail ]

this is the radiohead song, originally composed for that shitty romeo &juliet movie with leonardo dicaprio and claire daines (? i think). incredible work of art. i arranged it for trumpet, soprano sax, trombone, bass clarinet, and electric bass in accordance with the rules of 18th century counterpoint, with some diatonic planing thrown in . never got a good recording of it with my band, so here it is in all its MIDI glory, plus me of course. please forgive the cacked G#.for more of my compositions/arrangements, check out www.myspace.com/thejohnlakeensemble(live recordings - no more MIDI, i promise) [ More Detail ]

Also known as "Steamboat March," "Uncle Jim" (in Canada) and "Washington Quickstep," this tune, usually played in A major, was very popular in the 1800s. It can be played as a waltz, a march or a jig.A steamboat was tried out on the Delaware River by John Fitch as early as 1787. In 1807, Robert Fulton made the first trip from New York as far as Albany, and this great event was immediately celebrated in music. The earliest known printed version of the tune is in Elias Howe's "Complete Preceptor for the Accordeon" (1843), a selection of tunes arranged for the relatively new diatonic accordion in the key of 'C'. The version I play is based on an arrangement by Art Rosenbaum and Al Murphy. [ More Detail ]

the 5 positions of the C major diatonic scale, as taught by many instructors, are shown. John explains where they come from, and why he prefers the 7 scale positions with 3 notes on every string. That lesson is called "seven positions of major diatonic scale" on YouTube. On the website it's the lesson right before this one.3rd of six in series of introductory diatonic scale lessons.
