The Duke Of earl himself. Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. In putting together this box set, we have nearly all the biggest all time blockbusters, "Out On The Floor", "NightOwl', "I'm On My Way", "Time Will Pass You By", "Blowing My Mind To Pieces", "Do I Love You", all sung by the original singers. We believe this will go down in history as the greatest Northern Soul DVD collection of all time. Here, Chicago legend Gene Chandler sings his Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino anthem, "I Can Take Care Of Myself". From 1962 to 1970 Gene Chandler put half a dozen songs in the top forty, but he will always be best known for the first of these. Duke Of Earl topped the pop and R&B charts in 1962 and launched his career. Born Eugene Dixon in Chicago in 1937, he attended Englewood High School where he formed a group called the Gaytones in 1955. Two years later he joined a local singing group known as the Dukays, and a short time later went to Germany to serve a hitch with the U.S. Army. On his return in 1960 he re-joined the Dukays as lead singer, and the group signed with Nat the following year. The Dukays recorded Duke Of Earl for VeeJay in 1961. The inspiration for the name of the song and one of it's co-writers was Dukays vocalist Earl Edwards, who was known at the time as "Duke." When they ran into contract difficulties with Nat, Eugene Dixon left the group, changed his name to Gene Chandler, and began to promote the song. Chandler's recording of Duke Of Earl went to number one and remained there for three weeks early in 1962. Gene Chandler recorded some more songs for Vee-Jay that didn't do well, then changed to the Constellation label and began to work with the talented Chicago-area songwriter/producer Curtis Mayfield. Mayfield helped him a great deal and the result was a few more top forty songs, including Just Be True, What Now, and Nothing Can Stop Me. Mayfield also wrote Rainbow, a song that was recorded by and is closely associated with Gene Chandler. Chandler began to dress up like ... the Duke of Earl. He wore a monacle and a cape, and had a top hat and a cane. He appeared this way frequently, whether or not he was performing at the time, and appeared in a motion picture dressed in this garb and singing Duke Of Earl. Chandler was popular as a soul singer on the R&B charts. He recorded duets with such other Chicago-area singers as Barbara Acklin and Jerry Butler. He founded his own labels, including Mr. Chand and Bamboo, on which he produced two cousins from Mississippi: Mel and Tim put Backfield In Motion in the top ten in 1969. Chandler followed up with a big hit of his own with Groovy Situation on Mercury in 1970. He continued his association with Curtis Mayfield in the 70's. Gene worked at a frantic pace, became involved with drugs for a time and spent some time in jail briefly in 1976. He became executive vice-president of Chi-Sound and started to record disco songs under the direction of producer Carl Davis. His disco dance records were very popular in the UK in the late 70's. But these days he is best known and beloved for so so many records which broke massive on the Northern Soul Scene - There Was A Time, Such A Pretty Thing, Nothing Can Stop Me, Let Me Make Love To You, Bet You Never Thought, Mister Big Shot, and too many more to mention. Originally, back in early 1999, this was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This was first recorded in 1967 and then we recut it in 1999 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. Otis Leavill, the much missed late great Otis Leavill, brought us to Gene and asked him to film for us, in Otis's apartment, to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did. The men of Disney sing (or at least attempt to) "Duke of Earl." Sorry about how some of the parts of the video seem to pause for a moment. It didn't save right to my computer and I did not feel like re-saving it (cause it was taking so long). I tried to get the lip synching on as much as possible.I own nothing. The movie clips belong to Disney. The songs belong to respective artists and their record companies. No copyright infringement is intended.I hope you enjoy! [ More Detail ]
