I saw Jesus Christ in Madrid! When I finished eating a tapa of boquerones (skinned anchovy fillets in vinegar) standing at the bar of a restaurant, I turned around to leave and there, one yard away, was the best Jesus ever on screen, Willem Dafoe, eating Galician Herbón peppers at a table, next to a beautiful girl. In my excitement, I patted his shoulder and told him "You're a great actor. You're great!". The intense English Patient and Platoon star smiled. But there were more coincidences on my trip to Madrid to see my favorite band The Police at Rock In Río.I got on the night Talgo train in chilly Santiago de Compostela station. Couldn't sleep. I read my Camus and Police books. In the morning, tired, I went to see the works of my hero Goya, the bravest artist ever, and also the Renaissance portraits exhibit, both at the Prado. As always, I saw amazingly pretty people at the jaw-droppingly fine museum. I cried inside with Goya's "pajama-man" painting and with such engravings as "No se puede mirar" ("Can't Stand To Look"). I also felt the fear radiated by the devil-goat and the standing dunces. This third time at the Prado, I was impressed by the Dutch masters, and most of all by Rogier van der Weyden's "Descent From The Cross." It's alive! I noted down. I saw fabulous colors one doesn't see every day, like in Bernard van Orley's work. And I discovered a cool portrait painter named Pontormo. At night is when I saw Willem, and also a cool jazz trio on the square just outside the restaurant.On the day of the concert, another coincidence dictated that the Rodin exhibit I wanted to see was shown right by the Real Madrid stadium, which is where the buses would take the fans to Arganda del Rey, the site for the Rock In Río festival (about 1 hour away). Rodin's work amazed me with its frank sexuality and technical prowess. There was great beauty there. I bought a lousy book of quotes from the 1950's (thinking I would get wisdom from it). I've read part of the chosen quotes and I can't believe how male-chauvinistic they were in those days!In the hot sun that would bake my nape, I met while waiting for the bus a handsome Argentinian kid named Ligge. He and I later stood patiently in the burning Castilian sun and then headed for the first row by the stage. There we made friends with an amiable girl from Toledo named Ana. The Police concert was sensational, with Sting in particularly good form before an 80000-strong audience. Too much emotion. The best songs for me were "Invisible Sun" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger," in which Sting tenderly quoted "Bésame mucho." On the way back Ligge, who is a rap singer, spoke with admirable wisdom for his 17 years. My feet were killing me and I went back to the hotel after the craziness of the crammed city buses.On the next day, I found out that the train back to my Galician land was full, so I had to wait until the following day, June 7th. Thanks to that, I discovered a great ice-cream store on the Gran Vía called Palazzo. I really enjoyed the yogurt with raisins sundae! Then, the train ride back home was nice (as if we were all one family), though I felt very sad that the four-day adventure was over.I did record a few videos and took several photos. I hope that you like them. I was struck by the enticing eyes staring from a large street ad, also in the Gran Vía, with Penélope's face - I truly admire her since I saw her performance opposite Ben Kingsley in Isabel Coixet's excellent movie "Elegy".
