Waltz for Debby is a 1961 album by the Bill Evans Trio of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. This was Bill Evans' first trio. The album was the fourth and final effort from the unit—LaFaro died in a car accident just ten days after the live date at the Village Vanguard from which Waltz for Debby and its predecessor, Sunday at the Village Vanguard were taken. The loss of LaFaro hit Evans hard, who went into a brief seclusion. When he returned to the trio format later in 1962, it was with Motian and noted bassist Chuck Israels. The title track, a musical portrait of Evans' niece, became a staple of his live repertoire in later years. It originally appeared as a solo piano piece on Evans' debut album, New Jazz Conceptions. It remains what is likely Evans' most well-known song, one that he would play throughout his career. "The matryomin" is a kind of theremin. It is very unique because the device is set in the Matryoshka (or Russian doll). It is so difficult to play theremin fast and my performance is ... almost silly. Please see another version I uploaded if you like jazz guitar.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrJzGNT4-n0 [ More Detail ]
This is my favourite piano number. I arranged it for the guitar. My axe is a music man guitar installed the mm90 and piezo pickups. The mm90 is a music-man's P90 styled pickup which offers nice fat sound. The piezo sound is beautiful clean. I mixed those two up in ratio of about 2:1.On soloing I play the authentic archtop guitar built by Shiro Tsuji (a japanese luthier). It's beautiful. Please see the theremin version if you like.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyiPgFumic8 [ More Detail ]
