This is a segment from my tribute film, THE PASSION OF ANDY KAUFMAN, which you can download complete and uncut in mpeg format from my Subterranean Cinema website, located at "subcin.com". (I had to trim out about 45 minutes worth of clips that YouTube wouldnt allow to be posted, but they are available in the uncut mpeg). This segment shows how I ended my film. I didnt want Andy to go out with a whimper instead of a bang (as he did in real life), so thanks to Larry Cohen's "God Told Me To", I was able to make him go out with a bang instead of a whimper, in a manner more fitting his subversive genius. Music by Eumir Deodato.Special thanks to Alan Graham, Bob Pagani, Albin Sadar, Lynne Margulies, Bob Zmuda, David Letterman, Larry Cohen, Eumir Deodato, Queen, Chuck Barris, Jerry Lawler, D.W. Griffith, Frederick Astor, Richard Strauss, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stanley Kubrick, and Andy Kaufman. [ More Detail ]

As he begins a standard set of his usual stuff, Bob Zmuda lurks in the audience and starts heckling him mercilessly for doing the usual cliche. It gets uglier, to the point that Zmuda turns and says something rude to Pat Benatar's aunt, who has been calling out for him to shut up. As it turned out, Benatar's uncle was a very aggressive (and large) ex-policeman who still carried a gun in his boot, and he actually started to reach for it until someone quietly whispered to him that it was a stunt. You can clearly see the uncle going for his ankle holster in this clip. When it suddenly cut away (giving the appearance of an off camera fight that was edited out), I was one of the thousands of people that saw it at the time and called HBO to complain about their "censorship". One of Andy and Bob's most effective gags! Now apparently deeply contrite, he claims to have found Jesus in the meantime, and shows off his new "fiancee", Kathie Sullivan (of Lawrence Welk fame). He's just too creepily and convincingly close to the real thing in this. (I had to trim out about 45 minutes worth of clips that YouTube wouldnt allow to be posted, but they are available in the uncut mpeg). This segment contains the big FRIDAYS moment: Andy seems to rebel halfway through a seemingly lame sketch about marijuana, saying he cant do drug humor (the show had a reputation for a very drug friendly audience that tended to howl at any references to them). A live-on-the-air riot apparently ensues, with Andy ending up throwing water in the face of Michael Richards, and then getting into a fistfight with producer Jack Burns as he yells to go to a commercial. Richards and Burns were in on the gag, but Melanie Chartoff and Maryedith Burrell werent and their nervous and embarrassed reactions are genuine, and the audience as usual didnt have a clue. I didnt see this at the time (as I did the Lawler incident on Letterman), but I heard about it the next day on the news, and most viewers at the time believed it was real. If they had paid closer attention to the final shots, theyd see that the cast is a little too calm and happy as Andy is "dragged away" for it to be true.Special thanks to Alan Graham, Bob Pagani, Albin Sadar, Lynne Margulies, Bob Zmuda, David Letterman, Larry Cohen, Eumir Deodato, Queen, Chuck Barris, Jerry Lawler, D.W. It continues with one of my personal favorites, Bob Zmuda as the Masked Magician who is out to give away all the secrets of his colleagues out of spite, much to Andy's horror.Special thanks to Alan Graham, Bob Pagani, Albin Sadar, Lynne Margulies, Bob Zmuda, David Letterman, Larry Cohen, Eumir Deodato, Queen, Chuck Barris, Jerry Lawler, D.W. (I had to trim out about 45 minutes worth of clips that YouTube wouldnt allow to be posted, but they are available in the uncut mpeg). This segment contains the truly classic and infamous Letterman appearance with Jerry Lawler, where it looked like to the live audience (including me at the time) that Lawler had slapped Andy out of his chair on live television, which in fact he did, the reality of the slap is what made it so believable, to the point that I personally never knew it was faked until I saw MAN ON THE MOON in 1999 (they did a really horrible job of recreating this sequence in that film, but that's another story). After a long 15 minute break of commercials (unprecedented for the DL show), they came back in time to show Andy going off on a tirade censored so badly that you couldnt understand most of what he said. This is the UNCUT and complete appearance. Classic moment with the bachelorette, the other bachelors, and most of the audience totally clueless that it is an act (though the host, Jim Lange, was aware of it and did a good job of playing along). Apparently Andy's sorrow at not "winning" wasnt completely an act, he really was vastly disappointed and irritated that she hadnt chosen him. It would have been an interesting date, as he no doubt would never have broken out of the Baji character.Special thanks to Alan Graham, Bob Pagani, Albin Sadar, Lynne Margulies, Bob Zmuda, David Letterman, Larry Cohen, Eumir Deodato, Queen, Chuck Barris, Jerry Lawler, D.W. In his early days as a performance artist, Andy Kaufman would take to the stage and announce to the audience that he had very rare 16mm film footage of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, that was shot by an early cinematic pioneer named Frederick Astor. He would then show the rare and shocking footage, and most of the audience would be in tears by the time it was over. Andy solemnly concluded the showing by offering up a group prayer to the martyered president, and the stunned and saddened audience reverently joined in. This is the documentary footage that Kaufman showed his audience, the "Zapruder" film of the 1800s.
