He cultivated the knot through his unconventional drumming style — holding the stick between his fingers while using the rest of his hand to strum a guitar.Oh, and he sings, too. As local one-man band Via Vengeance, Ocell does everything (vocals, guitar, drums) at once during shows, and he doesn't cheat on his CDs, either. All the tracks on his new album were captured live in the studio, without recording each instrument on a separate track. Since Via Vengeance came into existence, Ocell's goal was to play heavy music without effects or overdubs, completely solo, and pull it off live.characterIllustration by Mike GormanI met up with Ocell on a recent Thursday evening at Carly's Bistro on Roosevelt Street. Ocell's tattoos are the most vibrant things in the bistro, which says a lot, considering Carly's walls are decorated with colorful works by local artists.Ocell's one-man show is as close to nuclear music as I've seen. A Via Vengeance performance revolves around the stocky, 5-foot-9 musician sitting at his drum set, with his guitar, and hammering out what sounds like a volcanic eruption in a garage. It's like watching a surly symphony spring from a small box.Ocell's methods are exceptional — most one-man bands rely on stomp boards instead of full drum sets onstage — but most one-man bands don't have the percussive pedigree of Ocell, who drummed for local punk legends Hillbilly Devilspeak in the late '90s.Most bands don't have the connections Ocell has gathered over the years, either. The 32-year-old musician counts among his friends guitarist Josh Graham (Red Sparowes, Neurosis), and producer Matt Bayles (Isis, Mastodon). Via Vengeance's new CD, Dieography, was produced by Bayles, and Graham did the cover art.While tossing out such details over Carly's paninis might make others seem like name-droppers, Ocell just comes off like a music fan who's honored to work with some of his heroes. And it's not like Bayles went easy on him while they were recording."If I messed up during a song, we'd record the whole thing over . . . the whole song," Ocell says. "But it was such a great experience, working with someone who's made some of my favorite records."Ocell's musical tastes lean toward stoner metal bands like Clutch, vanguard rock like the Melvins, and noise-rock bands like Janitor Joe and The Cows. Ocell shared a bill with the latter band when he was in Hillbilly Devilspeak and recounts his experience of seeing The Cows play. "Shannon [Selberg, The Cows' singer] is really good at intimidation," Ocell says. "I'm standing there, and he's looking at me like he wants to kill me."Selberg (now fronting Heroine Sheiks) is known for his crazy antics — there are stories of him wearing a doughnut on his head for a whole show and then chucking it at a woman's face, and of him performing with a sex doll wrapped around his body — but I wouldn't recommend a fight with Ocell. It's not that Ocell's crazy — in fact, he's probably one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He's just tough as hell.Ocell possesses the sort of fortitude that only comes from a fistfight with one's father. Shane's parents divorced when he was young, and his relationship with his father, David, was strained. David told Shane that when he turned 18, they were going to fight. And on Shane's 18th birthday, it happened. "My dad and I were playing pool," Ocell recalls, "and he took a swing at me. When we got home, we had a really big fight. We beat the crap out of each other. It got pretty brutal."From that day on, Shane seemed to have his father's respect. When David died of lung cancer in 2005, he and Shane had made amends. Other problems besieged Ocell around this time — his two-year relationship with his girlfriend ended, and he discovered that an employee at his San Diego piercing shop, Mastodon, had embezzled 20 grand from him.So, pissed off and seeking a creative outlet, Ocell started Via Vengeance. In 2006, he self-released a four-song EP, Shades of Blood. At the time, Ocell didn't have the means to tour, but he does now, in the form of a 1988 Honda wagon.Ocell's happy to have a vehicle to tour in. "It's perfect," Ocell says. "I can put all my gear in the back and still have plenty of room. The group got on one of those amazing '60s package tours with their regional Scepter hit, "Mr. Kirby," playing on an impressive roster that included The Who, Deep Purple and Spencer Davis, all behind headliner Herman's Hermits.Eventually, the group moved to L.A., making records with producer Dick Monda and singing backup for other artists, such as Kenny Rogers, who paid them each $8 for their services. "There was a camaraderie back then in recording," recalls Hudson. "You'd be walking down the halls of A&M and you'd see Joni Mitchell flirting with Graham Nash, and then suddenly someone would say, 'Hey, we're doing handclaps in here,' and everyone would get up and just walk in and handclap on your record. BCB Band sings Midnight Special by Lead Belly.Huddie William Ledbetter, (January, 1888 -- December 6, 1949) was an American folk and blues musician, notable for his clear and forceful singing, his virtuosity on the twelve string guitar, and the rich songbook of folk standards he introduced. He is best known as Leadbelly or Lead Belly. Though many releases list him as "Leadbelly," he himself spelled it "Lead Belly." This is also the usage on his tombstone, [1][2] as well as the Lead Belly Foundation.Although he most commonly played the twelve string, he could also play the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, concertina, and accordion. In some of his recordings, such as in one of his versions of the folk ballad "John Hardy", he performs on the accordion instead of the guitar. In other recordings he just sings while clapping his hands or stomping his foot. The topics of Lead Belly's music covered a wide range of subjects, including gospel songs; blues songs about women, liquor and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding and dancing. He also wrote songs concerning the newsmakers of the day, such as President Franklin Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Jean Harlow, the Scottsboro Boys and multi-millionaire Howard Hughes.Lead Belly's vast songbook, much of which he adapted from previous sources, has provided material for numerous folk, country, pop and rock acts since his time. Examples:ABBA recorded both "Pick A Bale Of Cotton" and "Midnight Special" Pete Seeger's band The Weavers had a hit with "Goodnight Irene" the year after Lead Belly's death The Animals had a hit with "The House of the Rising Sun" in 1964 and See See Rider in 1966 Ram Jam recorded Black Betty in 1977 Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded a popular version of "Midnight Special" and "Cotton Fields" in 1969 Mark Lanegan covered "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" for his album The Winding Sheet (1990), with Kurt Cobain participating Nirvana covered "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" in 1993 on their MTV Unplugged performance. Kurt Cobain prefaces the song by referring to Lead Belly as "my favorite performer... our favorite performer". Cobain also mentions an offer that was made to him by a man representing the Lead Belly estate to buy Lead Belly's guitar for $500,000. Nirvana's 2004 boxed set With the Lights Out contains four Lead Belly covers: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"; "They Hung Him On A Cross", "Ain't It A Shame" and an instrumental cover of "Grey Goose". Davy Graham covered "Leavin' Blues" Harry Belafonte covered "Sylvie" (attributed to Huddie Ledbetter and "Paul Campbell," a collective pen name[6] for The Weavers) for his album Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (1959). The Rolling Stones adapted "The Bourgeois Blues" for "When The Whip Comes Down". Van Morrison's first performance as a child was "Good Night, Irene", and he later recorded the song with Lonnie Donegan. In the title track to Morrison's Astral Weeks, the lyrics that refer to Lead Belly: "Talkin' to Huddie Ledbetter/Showin' pictures on the wall/" seem to be based on Morrison's real life custom of carrying around a poster of Lead Belly and hanging it on the wall wherever he was living. This was revealed in a Rolling Stone interview in 1978, where Morrison refers Lead Belly as "my guru".[7] He also mentions Lead Belly in the lyrics to his 1982 semi-autobigraphical song "Cleaning Windows" alongside other blues musicians that inspired Morrison in his youth.
