Ivan Davis/Franz Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 S.124 Part1-2 Thumbs list

High quality sound:http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=BlEI9g3N11g&fmt=18================================Franz Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 in E flat major, S.124 (LW H4) I.Allegro maestoso II.Quasi adagio - Allegretto vivace - Allegro animatoIII.Allegro marziale animato - PrestoIvan Davis, pianoRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra/Edward Downes================================IVAN DAVISThe 2005-2006 season marks the 45th anniversary celebration of the New York debut of the distinguished pianist Ivan Davis. One of the most honored artists of his generation, the Texas-born Davis began his studies at the age of 12 with his aunt, continued as a scholarship student of Silvio Scionti at North Texas State University, then received a Fulbright Award to study with Carlo Zecchi at L'Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1955 he won first prize at the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition and took top prizes in several international competitions: the Casella in Naples, the Busoni in Bolzano, and the Vianna da Motta in Lisbon. In 1960 he climaxed his prize-winning career by capturing the Grand Prize of the Franz Liszt competition and began his studies with the legendary Vladimir Horowitz.Previously, on October 21, 1959, Davis made his New York debut in recital at Town Hall, after which Harold Schonberg wrote in the New York Times, "this was an unusually exciting debut and it left no doubt that an important new American pianist has arrived on the scene." Davis soon appeared on national television as soloist with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and recorded with them works of Liszt and Rachmaninoff for Columbia Records, which also issued discs of solo piano works by Liszt, Haydn, Mozart, Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin, as well as concerto favorites with Andre Kostelanetz.During the next few years, Mr. Davis gave recitals in every state in the U.S.A. and appeared with almost every major symphony orchestra and every leading conductor, including the opening night Pension Fund Concert with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, as well as playing a recital on the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center. He received the Handel Medallion from the City of New York (its highest award) for his outstanding contribution to America's cultural life. He is one of the few pianists of his generation to have a biographical entry in the New Groves Dictionary of Music. In 1966, Mr. Davis made his debut in London at Queen Elizabeth Hall to extraordinary critical and public acclaim. Edward Greenfield wrote in the Guardian, "He brought one back -- or forward -- to a golden age of pianism." Davis was immediately engaged and re-engaged with all the major orchestras of Britain, in addition to recording concerti by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Liszt with the Royal Philharmonic (Decca-London label) and appearances with the London Philharmonic at New York's Carnegie Hall and Philadelphia's Academy of Music. He has also recorded best-selling solo albums of Chopin, virtuoso showpieces and the award-winning "Great Galloping Gottschalk" for the above label.http://www.ivandavis.com/Bio.html================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Haydn Symphony No.94 in G "Surprise"/Massimo Freccia Part4-4 Thumbs list

================================ Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major ("Surprise"/"The Drumstroke"/"Mit dem Paukenschlag"), H. 1/941 Adagio cantabile, Vivace assai Part1-4 2 Andante Part2-4 3 Menuett &Trio Part3-4 4 Finale Allegro di molto Part4-4Classical Period Symphony Orchestra of The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, Rome/Massimo Freccia================================Related information:Finale: Allegro moltoA characteristically rhythmically propulsive Haydn finale. Formally, the movement is an example of sonata rondo form, the opening bars appearing both at the beginning and in the middle of the development section. The stirring coda emphasizes the timpani.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._94_(Haydn)In 1802, an illness from which Haydn had been suffering for some time had increased in severity to the point that he became physically unable to compose. This was doubtless very difficult for him because, as he acknowledged, the flow of fresh musical ideas waiting to be worked out as compositions did not cease. Haydn was well cared for by his servants, and he received many visitors and public honours during his last years, but they could not have been very happy years for him. During his illness, Haydn often found solace by sitting at the piano and playing Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, which he had composed himself as a patriotic gesture in 1797 (Geiringer 1982, pp. 161--2). This melody later was used for the Austrian and German national anthems.Haydn died at the end of May in 1809, shortly after an attack on Vienna by the French army under Napoleon. He was 77. Among his last words was his attempt to calm and reassure his servants when cannon shot fell in the neighborhood (Geiringer 1982, p. 189). "My children, have no fear, for where Haydn is, no harm can fall." Two weeks later, a memorial service was held in the Schottenkirche on June 15, 1809, at which Mozart's Requiem was performed.Character and appearanceJames Webster writes of Haydn's public character thus: "Haydn's public life exemplified the Enlightenment ideal of the honnête homme (honest man): the man whose good character and worldly success enable and justify each other. His modesty and probity were everywhere acknowledged. These traits were not only prerequisites to his success as Kapellmeister, entrepreneur and public figure, but also aided the favourable reception of his music."[28] Haydn was especially respected by the Eszterházy court musicians whom he supervised, as he maintained a cordial working atmosphere and effectively represented the musicians' interests with their employer; see Papa Haydn and the tale of the "Farewell" Symphony.Haydn had a robust sense of humour, evident in his love of practical jokes[29] and often apparent in his music, and he had many friends. For much of his life he benefited from a "happy and naturally cheerful temperament" (Dies 1810, 91), but in his later life, there is evidence for periods of depression, notably in the correspondence with Mrs. Genzinger and in Dies's biography, based on visits made in Haydn's old age.Haydn was a devout Catholic who often turned to his rosary when he had trouble composing, a practice that he usually found to be effective.[30] He normally began the manuscript of each composition with "in nomine Domini" ("in the name of the Lord") and ended with "Laus Deo" ("praise be to God").[31]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Haydn================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Haydn Symphony No.94 in G "Surprise"/Massimo Freccia Part3-4 Thumbs list

================================ Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major ("Surprise"/"The Drumstroke"/"Mit dem Paukenschlag"), H. 1/941 Adagio cantabile, Vivace assai Part1-4 2 Andante Part2-4 3 Menuett &Trio Part3-4 4 Finale Allegro di molto Part4-4Classical Period Symphony Orchestra of The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, Rome/Massimo Freccia================================Related information:Menuetto: Allegro moltoA minuet and trio, in ternary form. The key returns to G major. The tempo marking marks the historical shift away from the old minuet and toward the scherzo; by the time of his last quartets Haydn had started to mark his minuets presto.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._94_(Haydn)Haydn continued:Another friend in Vienna was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whom Haydn met sometime around 1784. According to later testimony by Michael Kelly and others, the two composers occasionally played in string quartets together. Haydn was hugely impressed with Mozart's work and praised it unstintingly to others. Mozart evidently returned the esteem, as seen in his dedication of a set of six quartets, now called the "Haydn" quartets, to his friend. For further details see Haydn and Mozart.[edit] The London journeysIn 1790, Prince Nikolaus died and was succeeded by a thoroughly unmusical prince who dismissed the entire musical establishment and put Haydn on a pension. Freed of his obligations, Haydn was able to accept a lucrative offer from Johann Peter Salomon, a German impresario, to visit England and conduct new symphonies with a large orchestra. The visit (1791--1792), along with a repeat visit (1794--1795), was a huge success. Audiences flocked to Haydn's concerts; Haydn augmented his fame and made large profits, thus becoming financially secure. Charles Burney reviewed the first concert thus: "Haydn himself presided at the piano-forte; and the sight of that renowned composer so electrified the audience, as to excite an attention and a pleasure superior to any that had ever been caused by instrumental music in England."[24]Musically, the visits to England generated some of Haydn's best-known work, including the Surprise, Military, Drumroll, and London symphonies, the Rider quartet, and the "Gypsy Rondo" piano trio. The only misstep in the venture was an opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, also called L'Anima del Filosofo, which Haydn was contracted to compose, but whose performance was blocked by intrigues.[25]Between visits, Haydn taught Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven found him unsatisfactory as a teacher and sought help from others; the relationship between the two was sometimes rather tense. For discussion of their relationship, see Beethoven and his contemporaries.[26][edit] Final years in ViennaHaydn returned to Vienna in 1795, moved into a large house in the suburb of Gumpendorf,[27] and turned to the composition of large religious works for chorus and orchestra. These include his two great oratorios (The Creation and The Seasons) and six masses for the Eszterházy family, which by this time was once again headed by a musically-inclined prince. Haydn also composed instrumental music: the popular Trumpet Concerto and the last nine in his long series of string quartets, including the Fifths, Emperor, and Sunrise quartets.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Haydn================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Haydn Symphony No.94 in G "Surprise"/Massimo Freccia Part2-4 Thumbs list

================================ Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major ("Surprise"/"The Drumstroke"/"Mit dem Paukenschlag"), H. 1/941 Adagio cantabile, Vivace assai Part1-4 2 Andante Part2-4 3 Menuett &Trio Part3-4 4 Finale Allegro di molto Part4-4Classical Period Symphony Orchestra of The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, Rome/Massimo Freccia================================Related information:The Symphony No. 94 in G major (Hoboken 1/94) is the second of the twelve so-called London symphonies (numbers 93-104) written by Joseph Haydn. [edit] AndanteThis is the surprise movement, a theme and variations in 2/4 time and the subdominant key i.e. C major. The theme is in two eight-bar sections, each repeated. Haydn sets up the surprise, which occurs at the end of the repeat of the first section, by making the repeat pianissimo with pizzicato in the lower strings.Four variations of the theme follow, starting with embellishment in sixteenth notes by the first violins, moving to a stormy variation in C minor with trumpets and timpani, then solos for the first oboist and flautist, and concluding with a forte lyrical repeat in triplets. In the coda section, the opening notes are stated once more, this time reharmonized with gently dissonant diminished seventh chords over a tonic pedal.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._94_(Haydn)The years as KapellmeisterHaydn's job title under Count Morzin was Kapellmeister, that is, music director. He led the count's small orchestra and wrote his first symphonies for this ensemble. In 1760, with the security of a Kapellmeister position, Haydn married. His wife was the former Maria Anna Aloysia Apollonia Keller (1729--1800), the sister of Therese (b. 1733), with whom Haydn had previously been in love. Haydn and his wife had a completely unhappy marriage,[19] from which the laws of the time permitted them no escape; and they produced no children. Both took lovers.[20]Count Morzin soon suffered financial reverses that forced him to dismiss his musical establishment, but Haydn was quickly offered a similar job (1761) as Vice Kapellmeister to the Esterházy family, one of the wealthiest and most important in the Austrian Empire. When the old Kapellmeister, Gregor Werner, died in 1766, Haydn was elevated to full Kapellmeister. As a "house officer" in the Esterházy establishment, Haydn wore livery and followed the family as they moved among their various palaces, most importantly the family's ancestral seat Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt and later on Eszterháza, a grand new palace built in rural Hungary in the 1760s. Haydn had a huge range of responsibilities, including composition, running the orchestra, playing chamber music for and with his patrons, and eventually the mounting of operatic productions. Despite this workload, the job was in artistic terms a superb opportunity for Haydn.[21] The Esterházy princes (first Paul Anton, then most importantly Nikolaus I) were musical connoisseurs who appreciated his work and gave him daily access to his own small orchestra.During the nearly thirty years that Haydn worked at the Esterházy court, he produced a flood of compositions, and his musical style continued to develop. His popularity in the outside world also increased. Gradually, Haydn came to write as much for publication as for his employer, and several important works of this period, such as the Paris symphonies (1785--1786) and the original orchestral version of The Seven Last Words of Christ (1786), were commissions from abroad.Haydn also gradually came to feel more isolated and lonely, particularly as the court came to spend most of the year at Esterháza, far from Vienna, rather than the closer-by Eisenstadt (Geiringer 1982, p. 60). Haydn particularly longed to visit Vienna because of his friendships there.[22]Of these, a particularly important one was with Maria Anna von Genzinger (1750--93), the wife of Prince Nikolaus's personal physician in Vienna, who began a close, platonic, relationship with the composer in 1789. Haydn wrote to Mrs. Genzinger often, expressing his loneliness at Eszterháza and his happiness for the few occasions on which he was able to visit her in Vienna; later on, Haydn wrote to her frequently from London. Her premature death in 1793 was a blow to Haydn, and his F minor variations for piano, Hob. XVII:6, may have been written in response to her death.[23]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Haydn================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Haydn Symphony No.94 in G "Surprise"/Massimo Freccia Part1-4 Thumbs list

================================ Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major ("Surprise"/"The Drumstroke"/"Mit dem Paukenschlag"), H. 1/941 Adagio cantabile, Vivace assai Part1-4 2 Andante Part2-4 3 Menuett &Trio Part3-4 4 Finale Allegro di molto Part4-4Classical Period Symphony Orchestra of The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, Rome/Massimo Freccia================================Related information:The Symphony No. 94 in G major (Hoboken 1/94) is the second of the twelve so-called London symphonies (numbers 93-104) written by Joseph Haydn. It is usually called by its nickname, the Surprise Symphony, although in German it is more often referred to as the Symphony "mit dem Paukenschlag" ("with the kettledrum stroke"). The work is among the most popular of Haydn's symphonies and is frequently performed and recorded.Nickname (the Surprise)Haydn's music contains many jokes, and the 'Surprise' Symphony includes probably the most famous of all: a sudden loud chord in the theme of the variation-form second movement after a tranquil opening. The music then returns to its original quiet dynamic, as if nothing had happened, and the ensuing variations do not repeat the joke.Composition and premiereHaydn wrote the symphony in 1791 in London for a concert series he gave during the first of his two visits to England (1791-1792). The premiere took place at the Hanover Square Rooms in London on March 23, 1792, with Haydn leading the orchestra seated at a fortepiano. As with Haydn's England visits in general, the premiere was greatly successful. One reviewer wrote that the symphony was "equal to the happiest of this great Master's conceptions." In his feeble old age Haydn remembered the premiere with nostalgia, recounting to his biographer Griesinger...it was my wish to surprise the public with something new, and to make a debut in a brilliant manner, in order not to be outdone by my pupil Pleyel [who was leading a rival series of concerts] ...the first Allegro of my Symphony was received with countless bravos, but the enthusiasm reached its highest point in the Andante with the kettledrum stroke. Ancora, ancora! sounded from every throat, and even Pleyel complimented me on my idea. Toward the end of his active career Haydn wove the theme of the second movement into an aria of his oratorio The Seasons (1801), in which the bass soloist depicts a plowman whistling Haydn's tune as he works.InstrumentationThe Surprise Symphony is scored for a Classical-era orchestra consisting of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and the usual string section consisting of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. In recent decades performances of the work on historical instruments have become popular.A typical performance of the Surprise Symphony lasts about 23 minutes.MovementsLike all of Haydn's "London" symphonies, the work is in four movements, marked as follows:Adagio - vivace assaiA lyrical 3/4 introduction precedes a highly rhythmic main section in 6/8 time. As with much of Haydn's work, the first movement is written in so-called "monothematic" sonata form; that is, the movement to the dominant key in the exposition is not marked by a "second theme".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._94_(Haydn)================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. On leaving Catholic University, he served for three years in the United States Navy as a member of the Sea Chanters male chorus and later as a soloist with the US Navy Band. During that time, he continued his voice training with Renata Carisio Booth, who had been his teacher since his school days in Plattsburgh. He made his solo opera debut in 1976 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as Lindoro in Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri, and made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1981 in the same role, with Marilyn Horne as his Isabella. He went on to become one of the leading Rossini singers of his generation, singing regularly at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro since his debut there in 1983. He made his La Scala debut in 1992 as Giacomo in La donna del lago. It was La Scala's first production of the opera in 150 years and was staged to mark the bicentenary of Rossini's birth.Although several critics have expressed reservations about the intrinsic timbre of his voice, his two-and-a-half octave range and mastery of florid vocal technique (WITH HIS UNCANNY CONTROL TO ARTICULATE 4 SEPARATE NOTES TO A BEAT AT A 142 METRONOME SPEED)have made him a successful interpreter not only of Rossini's tenor roles but also those in operas by Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini and Handel. Within that repertoire, Blake has sung in over 40 operas, including relative rarities such as Rossini's Zelmira, Mozart's' Zaide, Donizetti's Il Furioso all'Isola San Domingo, Haydn's L'Infedelta Delusa and Boieldieu's La Dame blanche. Blake has also been active in the orchestral and oratorio tenor repertoire, performing in works by Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, Britten, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rossini, Saint-Saëns, and Stravinsky.Since 2001 he has increasingly devoted himself to teaching and has given master classes at the Associazione Lirica Concertistica Italiana in Milan, the Conservatoire Nationale de Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Duke University in North Carolina, the State University of New York, the Hamburg Staatsoper, and the Chicago Lyric Opera young artists program. His last appearances on the opera stage were as Uberto in Rossini's La donna del lago (Lisbon, 2005) and as Libenskoff in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims (Montecarlo, 2005)Prizes and DistinctionsRichard Tucker Award 1978 Cavaliere Ufficiale, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana 1994 Diapason d'Or de l'Aneé 1994 Honorary Degree - Doctor of Music, State University of New York Victoire de la Musique 1997 Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres de la République Française 2000 Grand Prix du Palmares des Palmares 2004 [ More Detail ]

THIS IS PT 1 OF 2, PT 2 CAN BE FOUND HERE:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f-xW0a9GLgBlake studied music first at the State University of New York (Fredonia) and then at the Catholic University of America.
