Ivan Davis/Franz Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 S.124 Part1-2 Thumbs list

High quality sound:http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=BlEI9g3N11g&fmt=18================================Franz Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 in E flat major, S.124 (LW H4) I.Allegro maestoso II.Quasi adagio - Allegretto vivace - Allegro animatoIII.Allegro marziale animato - PrestoIvan Davis, pianoRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra/Edward Downes================================IVAN DAVISThe 2005-2006 season marks the 45th anniversary celebration of the New York debut of the distinguished pianist Ivan Davis. One of the most honored artists of his generation, the Texas-born Davis began his studies at the age of 12 with his aunt, continued as a scholarship student of Silvio Scionti at North Texas State University, then received a Fulbright Award to study with Carlo Zecchi at L'Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1955 he won first prize at the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition and took top prizes in several international competitions: the Casella in Naples, the Busoni in Bolzano, and the Vianna da Motta in Lisbon. In 1960 he climaxed his prize-winning career by capturing the Grand Prize of the Franz Liszt competition and began his studies with the legendary Vladimir Horowitz.Previously, on October 21, 1959, Davis made his New York debut in recital at Town Hall, after which Harold Schonberg wrote in the New York Times, "this was an unusually exciting debut and it left no doubt that an important new American pianist has arrived on the scene." Davis soon appeared on national television as soloist with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and recorded with them works of Liszt and Rachmaninoff for Columbia Records, which also issued discs of solo piano works by Liszt, Haydn, Mozart, Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin, as well as concerto favorites with Andre Kostelanetz.During the next few years, Mr. Davis gave recitals in every state in the U.S.A. and appeared with almost every major symphony orchestra and every leading conductor, including the opening night Pension Fund Concert with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, as well as playing a recital on the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center. He received the Handel Medallion from the City of New York (its highest award) for his outstanding contribution to America's cultural life. He is one of the few pianists of his generation to have a biographical entry in the New Groves Dictionary of Music. In 1966, Mr. Davis made his debut in London at Queen Elizabeth Hall to extraordinary critical and public acclaim. Edward Greenfield wrote in the Guardian, "He brought one back -- or forward -- to a golden age of pianism." Davis was immediately engaged and re-engaged with all the major orchestras of Britain, in addition to recording concerti by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Liszt with the Royal Philharmonic (Decca-London label) and appearances with the London Philharmonic at New York's Carnegie Hall and Philadelphia's Academy of Music. He has also recorded best-selling solo albums of Chopin, virtuoso showpieces and the award-winning "Great Galloping Gottschalk" for the above label.http://www.ivandavis.com/Bio.html================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Horszowski plays Haydn Sonata in A flat no. 43 Thumbs list

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809):Piano Sonata in Ab, Hob. XVI: 43, published in 1783I ModeratoII Menuetto - Trio - Menuetto da CapoIII Rondo/PrestoMieczyslaw Horszowski, pianoLive recording, 1957.Born: June 23, 1892 - Lemberg (Lvov), PolandDied: May 22, 1993 - Philadelphia, PA, USAThe Polish-born pianist, Mieczyslaw Horszowski, was taught to play the piano by his mother, a student of one of Chopin's students, and his main teacher, Theodor Leschetizky, was a protégé of Carl Czerny. Horszowski was playing (and transposing) Bach inventions at age five; at eight he was presented to the public as a prodigy, and at ten he began his formal career. He played for Fauré and perhaps Camille Saint-Saëns in 1905 and made his USA debut, at Carnegie Hall, the following year. It was also during 1906 that he met the youthful Pablo Casals and Arturo Toscanini, who became lifelong friends and collaborators. Horszowski was especially noted as a chamber music pianist and became a fixture of Casals' Prades Festival for many years.Interrupting his high-flying career to pursue a humanities degree at the Sorbonne in Paris from 1911 to 1913, Mieczyslaw Horszowski moved to Milan during the war and remained there until 1939, touring internationally. As World War II broke out he was appearing in Brazil, and instead of returning to Europe he headed for the USA, where he remained for the rest of his life. He quickly found performing opportunities with Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra, and he began teaching at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute in 1942. He was a fixture of New York's recital scene, performing complete cycles of Beethoven's piano works and Mozart sonatas and concertos, and he appeared at the White House in 1961 and 1978. Horszowski was the first person to record while playing the first known piano constructed, an instrument built in 1720 by Bartolomeo Cristofori and housed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.In 1981, at age 89, Mieczyslaw Horszowski married for the first time; his wife was Italian pianist Beatrice Costa. His eyesight declined, which put an end to his concerto and chamber music performances, but he continued his solo recital career, performing from memory. He performed his last recital at age 99, slightly more than a year before his death in 1993. At the Curtis Institute he taught an impressive roster of students, including Anton Kuerti, Murray Perahia, and Richard Goode.Mieczyslaw Horszowski played a range of music but focused on Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, and even in his last years he essayed difficult works like Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. Although his recording career only goes back to 1936, the traditions of playing he represented are much older than that, dating back to the early Romantic era.Source: All Music Guide Website (Author: James Manheim) [ More Detail ]

Haydn Symphony No.94 in G "Surprise"/Massimo Freccia Part1-4 Thumbs list

================================ Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 94 in G major ("Surprise"/"The Drumstroke"/"Mit dem Paukenschlag"), H. 1/941 Adagio cantabile, Vivace assai Part1-4 2 Andante Part2-4 3 Menuett &Trio Part3-4 4 Finale Allegro di molto Part4-4Classical Period Symphony Orchestra of The Accademia Di Santa Cecilia, Rome/Massimo Freccia================================Related information:The Symphony No. 94 in G major (Hoboken 1/94) is the second of the twelve so-called London symphonies (numbers 93-104) written by Joseph Haydn. It is usually called by its nickname, the Surprise Symphony, although in German it is more often referred to as the Symphony "mit dem Paukenschlag" ("with the kettledrum stroke"). The work is among the most popular of Haydn's symphonies and is frequently performed and recorded.Nickname (the Surprise)Haydn's music contains many jokes, and the 'Surprise' Symphony includes probably the most famous of all: a sudden loud chord in the theme of the variation-form second movement after a tranquil opening. The music then returns to its original quiet dynamic, as if nothing had happened, and the ensuing variations do not repeat the joke.Composition and premiereHaydn wrote the symphony in 1791 in London for a concert series he gave during the first of his two visits to England (1791-1792). The premiere took place at the Hanover Square Rooms in London on March 23, 1792, with Haydn leading the orchestra seated at a fortepiano. As with Haydn's England visits in general, the premiere was greatly successful. One reviewer wrote that the symphony was "equal to the happiest of this great Master's conceptions." In his feeble old age Haydn remembered the premiere with nostalgia, recounting to his biographer Griesinger...it was my wish to surprise the public with something new, and to make a debut in a brilliant manner, in order not to be outdone by my pupil Pleyel [who was leading a rival series of concerts] ...the first Allegro of my Symphony was received with countless bravos, but the enthusiasm reached its highest point in the Andante with the kettledrum stroke. Ancora, ancora! sounded from every throat, and even Pleyel complimented me on my idea. Toward the end of his active career Haydn wove the theme of the second movement into an aria of his oratorio The Seasons (1801), in which the bass soloist depicts a plowman whistling Haydn's tune as he works.InstrumentationThe Surprise Symphony is scored for a Classical-era orchestra consisting of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and the usual string section consisting of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. In recent decades performances of the work on historical instruments have become popular.A typical performance of the Surprise Symphony lasts about 23 minutes.MovementsLike all of Haydn's "London" symphonies, the work is in four movements, marked as follows:Adagio - vivace assaiA lyrical 3/4 introduction precedes a highly rhythmic main section in 6/8 time. As with much of Haydn's work, the first movement is written in so-called "monothematic" sonata form; that is, the movement to the dominant key in the exposition is not marked by a "second theme".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._94_(Haydn)================================ *Note:Support the artist, their families and their legacy by purchasing their music. Тhe tour culminated in а recital at Camegie Hall.As principal soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic Society for twenty five years, Ms. Mdivani's career as orchestral soloist and recitalist has taken her throughout Europe, Russia and North and South America. Her repertoire includes approximately 40concertos plus а vast number of chamber works. Often her programs are unusual. In оnсе concert, for example, she played а five Prokofiev concertos. She has recorded works bу Haydn, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky for ЕМI and works bу Prokofieff, Mendelsshon, Debussy, Ovshinnikov, Weinberg and Taktakishivili for Melodiya.Ms. Mdivani has been а successful professor of piano at McGill University since 1992. Her students have а reputation for being solid and consistent pianists. Many of them have won competitions, scholarships and awardsMARINA MDIVANI IN РIANO RESIТALNew York Times (1957-Current; Nov 28, 1963; Pro Quest Historical Newspapers The New York Times)Soviet Performer is Heard in Local Debut at Carnegie .. Marina. Mdivani, the latest Soviet pianist to play here, made her Carnegie Hall debut last night. In a brilliant recital and it should bе said at the outset that she has the stuff of а great pianist.Miss Mdivani is 27 years old. She won the .Marguerite Long competition in Paris. In 1961 and has just completed an eight week. United States tour, her first. Her extraordinary talents are not sensational although for virtuoso technique she takes а back seat to no one. Rather her profile is of. аn intense musicality, rich in temperament, and kept in rein bу а keen intellect. There are. sensational elements - the way she ripped through the octave sections оf the .Liszt В minor Sonаta - but they were not employed to achieve sensational effects, only musical ones. Тhe Liszt. Sonata and Beethoven's 15 Variations and Fugue on а Theme from "Prormetheus" (Ор. 35) showed Мiss Mdivani (which 18 pronounced ~mm-DI-Vahn-ee) at her best , for in both works she soled the technical problems with ease, using. the piano's tonal palette as if it were аn orchestra And she solved the more difficult problem of providing con tinuity with .equal ease. For above аl1 the beautiful pianism in which Miss Mdivani indulged was the feeling of the unbroken arch of the music. This she - manаgеd bу treating the phrases to simple understatements that gave momentary satisfaction while whetting the appetite for mоrе. And when the c1imaxes came, they were not overdone, but one sensed а reserve оf power.Тhe bravura sound did not a1ways jibe with the visual impression, for Miss Mdivani seemed overly self-contained and restrained. With her closecropped dark hair and round childlike о face it seemed incongruous that such а simple bearing should contain such. а tornado of talent.Her. playing is so close to being. completely satisfying it seems ungallant to point out а debit. But there is one and it is that despite the pyrotechnical brilliance, the kind. Of excitement that. pulls the 1istener from his chair is missing. For even in Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov's Chorale, Prelude and Fugue, which was. given its local premiere, she failed to bring down the house. Тhе applause was sustained, but not tumultuous, and it should have been. The piese is а hodge-podge of - Khachaturian, and Rachmaninoff and seem to have been written to make "Islamey" look like "chop-sticks."But for. what. her playing hаs in the way of solid musicality, а tonal control that embraces warm cantabile, shimmering pianissimos' and thunderous fortes, we can forego the explosive brio. Another great pianist hаs arrived. HOWARD КLEIN. [ More Detail ]

Zara Dolukhanova- Serenade (Tchaikovsky) Thumbs list

Zara Dolukhanova (1918-2007)The Armenian mezzo Zara Dolukhanova made her stage debut in Erevan in 1939, and while she left the operatic stage while still in her 20's, she subsequently built a very enviable concert and radio career that lasted well into the 1970s. Dolukhanova was highly renowned for the breadth of her repertory, from Handel to Haydn to many 20th century composers whose works she championed- including Shostakovich, Gavrilin, Tariverdiev, Weinberg, Shaporin, and Sviridov. After switching from mezzo to soprano in 1963, Dolukhanova also sang the title role in the Russian premiere of Puccini's Suor Angelica. However, she is perhaps best remembered as a bel canto specialist, responsible for bringing to the Russian stage such Rossini operas as L'Italiana in Algeri, Cenerentola, and Semiramide. In the time since my previous upload of Arsace's cavatina from Semiramide, I've received a number of requests for another Dolukhanova recording, so I thought that the intimate chamber setting of the art song would make a welcome contrast (as well as an indicator of the singer's versatility). Dolukhanova's graceful, lilting way with Tchaikovsky's gentle lyricism is quite winsome in the latter's romance "Serenade", Op.63, No.6, with text by Grand Duke Konstantin Romanov. The recording dates from 1950, and Dolukhanova is accompanied by pianist Berta Kozel. An English translation of the romance can be found at the following link:http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/get_text.html?TextId=13801 [ More Detail ]

Brentano String Quartet / Mendelssohn Op. 80 (part 2) Thumbs list

Quartet for Strings no 6 in F minor, Op. 80 by Felix MendelssohnMark Steinberg, violinSerena Canin, violinMisha Amory, violaNina Maria Lee, celloSince its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. "Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding," raves the London Independent; the New York Times extols its "luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism"; the Philadelphia Inquirer praises its "seemingly infallible instincts for finding the center of gravity in every phrase and musical gesture"; and the Times (London) opines, "the Brentanos are a magnificent string quartet...This was wonderful, selfless music-making." Within a few years of its formation, the Quartet garnered the first Cleveland Quartet Award and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award; and in 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two, a program which has become a coveted distinction for chamber groups and individuals ever since. The Quartet had its first European tour in 1997, and was honored in the U.K. with the Royal Philharmonic Award for Most Outstanding Debut. That debut recital was at London's Wigmore Hall, and the Quartet has continued its warm relationship with Wigmore, appearing there regularly and serving as the hall's Quartet-in-residence in the 2000-01 season. In recent seasons the Quartet has traveled widely, appearing all over the United States and Canada, in Europe, Japan and Australia. It has performed in the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York; the Library of Congress in Washington; the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; the Konzerthaus in Vienna; Suntory Hall in Tokyo; and the Sydney Opera House. The Quartet has participated in summer festivals such as Aspen, the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, the Edinburgh Festival, the Kuhmo Festival in Finland, the Taos School of Music and the Caramoor Festival. In addition to performing the entire two-century range of the standard quartet repertoire, the Brentano Quartet has a strong interest in both very old and very new music. It has performed many musical works pre-dating the string quartet as a medium, among them Madrigals of Gesualdo, Fantasias of Purcell, and secular vocal works of Josquin. Also, the quartet has worked closely with some of the most important composers of our time, among them Elliot Carter, Charles Wuorinen, Chou Wen-chung, Steven Mackey, Bruce Adolphe, and György Kurtág. The Quartet has commissioned works from Wuorinen, Adolphe, Mackey, David Horne and Gabriela Frank. The Quartet celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2002 by commissioning ten composers to write companion pieces for selections from Bach's Art of Fugue, the result of which was an electrifying and wide-ranging single concert program. The Quartet has also worked with the celebrated poet Mark Strand, commissioning poetry from him to accompany works of Haydn and Webern. The Quartet has been privileged to collaborate with such artists as soprano Jessye Norman, pianist Richard Goode, and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. The Quartet enjoys an especially close relationship with Ms. Uchida, appearing with her on stages in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The Quartet has recorded the Opus 71 Quartets of Haydn, and has also recorded a Mozart disc for Aeon Records, consisting of the K. 464 Quartet and the K. 593 Quintet, with violist Hsin-Yun Huang. In the area of newer music, the Quartet has released a disc of the music of Steven Mackey on Albany Records, and has also recorded the music of Bruce Adolphe, Chou Wen-chung and Charles Wuorinen. In 1998, cellist Nina Lee joined the Quartet, succeeding founding member Michael Kannen. The following season the Quartet became the first Resident String Quartet at Princeton University. The Quartet's duties at the University are wide-ranging, including performances at least once a semester, as well as workshops with graduate composers, coaching undergraduates in chamber music, and assisting in other classes at the Music Department. The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved", the intended recipient of his famous love confession.
