He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to the mainland United States in 1920. He worked with Duke Ellington from 1929 to 1944 and it was during this period that he composed Caravan and "Perdido". After that he worked with the Harry James orchestra in California which allowed him to see his wife more often. In 1957 he was a guest on The Nat King Cole Show.
