Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s."Love Will Tear Us Apart" was written in August and September of 1979 and was debuted when the band supported Buzzcocks on their UK tour in September and October 1979, and it is one of the few songs in which singer Ian Curtis played guitar (albeit somewhat minimally). The title of the song is a play on the title of a Neil Sedaka song "Love Will Keep Us Together" made popular by The Captain &Tennille in 1975. The lyrics are perceived to reflect the problems in Ian Curtis' marriage to Deborah Curtis, as well as his general frame of mind in the time leading up to his suicide in May 1980. Deborah Curtis had the phrase "Love Will Tear Us Apart" inscribed on Ian Curtis' memorial stone. The song was first released in April 1980 and, after Curtis' suicide that May, became the band's first chart hit, reaching number 13 in the UK. It also debuted at #1 in New Zealand in June 1981. The band broke up after his death and reformed as New Order. [ More Detail ]
In the early hours of 18 May 1980, Ian Curtis hanged himself in his kitchen after having viewed Werner Herzog's film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's The Idiot. At the time of his death, his health was failing as a result of his epilepsy and a hectic touring schedule, and his marriage was falling apart.Tony Wilson later said, "I'd been warned on a train to London two weeks earlier by Annik (Honoré, Curtis' lover). I asked her, 'What do you think of the new album.' She goes, 'I'm terrified.' I said, 'What are you terrified of?' She replies, 'Don't you understand? When he sings 'I take the blame' He means it.' And I go, 'No, he doesn't mean it - it's art'. And guess what? He fucking meant it".Curtis's memorial stone, which is inscribed with "Ian Curtis 18-5-80" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart", was stolen in July 2008 from the Cheshire cemetery where he is buried. Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards),[1] Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. According to music critic Jon Savage, the band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy."[2] Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, caught the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Wilson's independent record label Factory Records, and drew critical acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis with epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, and often had seizures during performances. In May 1980, on the eve of the band's first American tour, Curtis, overwhelmed with depression, committed suicide. Joy Division's posthumously released second album, Closer (1980), and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became the band's highest charting releases. After the death of Curtis, the remaining members reformed as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success. Video by Gil [ More Detail ]

On 6th May 2008, Peter Hook took part in a BBC Radio 4 programme called "Great Lives". This episode was all about Ian Curtis, and during the show, Peter unveiled part of a never-before-heard recording of "Love Will Tear Us Apart", featuring Ian Curtis singing the lyric with just a piano as instrumentation. I've included the entire section of the interview relating to this recording, so now you know as much about it as I do. I'm just blown away by this - isn't it just so beautiful? Ian's vocals are really fantastic. Please, please, please, Hooky (or whoever has the complete recording) - can you release it in full? I can't believe that this incredible tape has been sitting in some dusty archive somewhere, all these years. It deserves an official release. To hear the audio at full high-quality, you need to add the following text onto the end of the url for the video:&fmt=18(unless you add this text, you'll only hear a compressed, inferior quality audio, because YouTube compresses the quality by default).
