Harold Lloyd was undoubtedly one of the best film entertainers of the twentieth century; but, he has also been too long forgotten/ignored in favor of Chaplin and Keaton, even though he was more popular and made more money than both during his heyday. Also, Lloyd was a HUGE influence on Jackie Chan. Not only do many of Chan's stunts obviously pay homage to Lloyd, but his good-guy character (both on &off-screen) links to Lloyd's. Anyway, here is a "tribute" to him with clip from some of his movies--the song is "Act Naturally" by the Beatles. Some other users have his movies uploaded on youtube, so you can fully enjoy his masterful works. Also, his autobio "An American Comedy" is a great read. [ More Detail ]

Mabel's Dream -- King Oliver's Jazz Band 1923This a track from the famous Oliver/Armstrong recordings. The band plays Mabel's Dream. A famous movie star in those years was Mabel Normand.Could this composition and it's name have had anything to do with her popularity? Maybe, or maybe not. Who is there still to ask?WHO WAS MABEL NORMAND?Mabel Normand was known as the female Chaplin and the undisputed queen of comedy. It was Mabel who is credited with throwing the first custard pie as a gag on screen. She helped get Charlie Chaplin his start in movies, even directing him in his first films. She ranked with Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. It might be said that Charlie was a male Mabel.Mabel told people that she was born on November 10, 1893, in New Brighton, Staten Island, New York. Mabel was a natural athlete and a breathtaking beauty. At the time of her death in February 1930 she left behind a world full of broken hearts that mourned her carefree innocence and brilliant comic style. Sadly, the screen has never again seen the likes of darling, dainty, dashing Mabel with the curly locks. Always happy and gay; that's her way!Of all the comediennes of the silent film era, none was more talented and touching, more original and funny than Mabel Normand. As well as being one of early film comedy's most notable stars, she was also one of its most innovative and creative pioneers. [ More Detail ]
This is a restored version of BLISS that was released on 9.5mm Pathex in 1917. The beginning of this version up to the title "Harold has met the Only Girl..." and everything after the intertitle "Five telephone calls in as many hours..." near the end of the film, was taken from the film sold as GIVE AND TAKE on 9.5mm Pathex, but which was in fact just scenes taken from the film BLISS. This version compiles all the footage from both films. The public domain music used on these films was then re-edited to fit this new version. Now enjoy! [ More Detail ]

Like THE FLIRT, this is (unfortunately) an abridged version of BY THE SAD SEA WAVES found on an old video cassette. Although I didn't remove any footage from this film I did take out a whole minute and a half by just shortening the titles and intertitles. I then re-edited the music to fit the shorter length.
