•Manuscript of Kalila Wa Dimmna By Abdulla Ibin Muqqaffa.•Studied and written by Dr.Yahiya Ibn Junaid. The second oldest illustrated copy known of Kalilawa Dimna is the one of the late King Faisal binAbdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy upon his soul. This copy is currently preserved in King FaisalCenter for Research and Islamic Studies. It wastranscribed in 747 Hijra. including its 96 miniatures. This magnificent copy represents the models of the Mamluke portrayal school and,the general pattern of the manuscript reveals that it waswritten in an elegant and refined Neskhi script, calledNaskhi Warraqi, with each page comprises 15 linesin average, while some words are fully vocalized, and there are some marginal commentaries andnotes on a number of pages. The miniatures andornaments are perfectly executed and their colourswere skillfully used. Each miniature expressesdirectly the main line of each one of the tales. Itis noticed that the miniatures or portrays includedin this copy are mentioned within the context ingeneral rather than referring to specific places.Theminiatures are mostly preceded by titles to explaintheir contents, such as (the portray of Dimna talkingto the Ox) (the portray of a man digging the treasureand other men moving it)... etc.Looking analytically at drawing no.1 (a man diggingthe treasure) we see the motion of portrayingpersons which is very close to reality in showing themotion of the foot, the hands' movement, the faceexpressions in addition to the different garments ofpeople in the miniature. The various colours usedhave added a strong sense of harmony between thevariant aspects of the miniature.Among the nice drawings is the one that represents aconversation between a man and a bird. It shows theman riding a moving horse while pointing his fingerat the bird which is listening to him carefully whilethe horse is in a state of movement. There are, moreover, two plants in front andbehind the horse. Another miniature, representing aconversation between Dimna and the Ox, showingDimna standing on a high place while addressingthe humble and all ears Ox. The Ox was drawn inred colour with two golden horns and a golden ropewith a golden bell hanging from its neck. Anotherfine miniature, representing a lion attacking adonkey at its back side while there is a jackalwaiting to have his share. The artist skill isexceedingly obvious in portraying the donkeyin a state of panic and fear by turning his headtowards the lion. Among other fine miniaturesin King Faisal's copy, is a miniature portrayinga lion, a wolf and a crow preying upon a camel. It is almost the same miniature that one findsin the McGill University's copy but with onlyone difference; the McGill University'scopy contains a crow, while King Faisal'scopy contains a jackal instead. Thisparticular miniature of King Faisal's copyis artistically well executed by the artist;therefore, it is artistically far superior inquality and design than the miniature of theMcGill University's copy. The last fine miniature but not the least is aminiature showing, a monkey on a tree anda male tortoise lifting his head in the seawhile conversing with each other. The artist's interest in nature seems toconcentrate on portraying the tree in a waymuch minute than the animals. Most of the miniatures in this copy are highlyexpressive, precise and of high value amongsimilar artworks of Arabic manuscripts. At the colophon we find the signature ofthe copier and the date of transcription. At thiscolophon, we read the following: "the book ofKalila wa Dimna was completed on the 26th ofSafar, 747 Hijra. May Allah's peace and blessingsbe upon our Prophet Muhammad, His Household,His Companions, His Wives, and His virtuousdescendants and upon those who righteouslyfollow them till the day of Judgment. Writtenby the most insignificant among Allah's servantsand the most needy to His mercy; Muhammadibn Ali ibn Salim ibn Ahmed al-Hanafi, mayAllah forgive them all».Verily, this unique copy of Kalila wa Dimna, with its miniatures and its complete colophonmake it one of the most precious copy so farknown all over the world. This reflects the deep knowledge and interest ofthe late king Faisal about the Arabic and Islamicheritage. Only a person of a very fine taste andof a special appreciation of the Islamic artswould acquire such a copy.•Manuscript of Kalila Wa Dimmna By Abdulla Ibin Muqqaffa.Studied and written by Dr.Yahiya Ibn Junaid. He has recently (December 06) co-authored a paper for the scientific journal, Ecological Complexity, with Baliunas, Dyck, Soon, Baydack, Legates, and Hancock entitled Polar bears of western Hudson Bay and climate change: Are warming spring air temperatures the "ultimate" survival control factor? He is also co-author of the book Eighteenth Century Naturalists of Hudson Bay (2004 - McGill/Queens University Press) with Dr. Stuart Houston, one of the World's leading authorities on arctic birds.Dr. Ball is a leader in the current global warming debate and appears regularly as a guest on radio and television - click here to watch one of his recent appearances on Fox TV's "Hannity and Colmes"; click here to listen to his June 9, 2007 radio interview on the Nick at Night on CFRA Radio in Ottawa, Ontario.Dr. Ball is also published frequently in leading newspapers and magazines across Canada and, increasingly, the U.S. and abroad A measure of Dr. Ball's impact was seen recently when, after one of his pieces was featured on the Drudge Report, a leading on-line news service (click here to see original piece), he received approximately 1,000 e-mails from the general public during the next 24 hours, 90% of which were supportive. Dr. Ball personally responded to over 500 of these, providing respondents with information as requested -- as a consequence several are now NRSP supporters.Dr. Ball's public presentations - over 600 in the past ten years -- have been enthusiastically received by professional societies, business conferences, public forums and a wide variety of public, private and non-profit organizations. His entertaining, yet solidly science-based description of the current climate change controversy has resulted in him being a much sought after speaker continent-wide. Recognizing the different knowledge-levels and interests of particular audiences, Dr. Ball specially tunes his talks to appeal to listeners and, as a consequence, is regular repeat presenter for many groups. Dr. Ball's compelling presentation style and scientific expertise has resulted in his inclusion as a scientific advisor and lead participant in a number of recent made-for-TV climate change videos, The Great Global Warming Swindle shown on TV4 on March 8th in the U.K. being the most recent example.
