3-6/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 6th episode of the 3rd series we witness a super veteran actor Hisaya Morishige at the age of 84 first appears on camera rather feebly but takes a stunning metamorphosis once he starts to act for his role of the cursed boar god Okkoto. Miyazaki hesitates before the actor at first and looks so not in his usual sharp-tongued way but as the actor's acting gets ardent Director soon becomes back to be giving persistent comments as normally does. From his comments we'll understand that Okkoto's a symbolic figure who shoulders the same sorts of the burdens of his fate as Shakespeare's King Lear does. After the recordings Morishige comments that all his grandchildren are fanatic about watching Miyazaki's anime works and Miyazaki confesses to Morishige then that watching ''the Tale of the White Serpent (1958)'', the first Japan-made long lengthed full coloured anime, for which Morishige starred for its hero's voice, dramatically pushed young Miyazaki then in high school forward to be an animator to create that kind of animation.Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

3-5/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 5th episode of the 3rd series we firstly hear Producer Suzuki talking about how a miracle occurred a few months before the film Princess Mononoke's premiere around when they were so much behind on their animation procedures.Next appears Miwa the Great - Akihiro MIWA is a chanson singer, actor-actress, artist with an unmistakable aura, also widely known as the first significant Japanese boy (and was he beautiful!!) who came out to the world as a gay. He used to sing at a literary bar and be engaged in the plays of Yukio Mishima's, working with Mishima himself.Miyazaki explains to Miwa beforehand about his image of Moro, the Wolf God, symbolising complexity and the great power of the nature itself, as never a simpleton advocator with ''Let's protect our dear green!'' message or such, because, according to Director, the nature definitely has its tremendously brutal, savage side though containing the great mother's divinity all the same.Miwa then replies with the Buddhist's concept of Bodhisattva (the fully enlightened one; 菩薩) , whose shadow image is thought to be Acala (the immovable king icon; 不動明王). All Acala statues have a scary look because, according to Miwa, an Acala could be even more demonic than a demon itself if a person he's facing with has a malicious heart, but otherwise the stand-still king icon gives benevolence. All in all, we'll be sure to enjoy the mature conversations between Miyazaki and Miwa! Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

3-4/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 4th episode of the 3rd series we first see a veteran actress Yuko Tanaka (Lady Eboshi) gets advised by Miyazaki not to act too much like ''Takarazuka''. Takarazuka is shortened for ''Takarazuka Revue (宝塚歌劇団)'', that is an all-female professional theatre performance group (generally famous for its own very strict internal rules and very elaborate theatrical acting/ performances). Shortly after, Director recognises because Tanaka-san was trying too much to make a bold, masculine voice for Lady Eboshi, her voice sounded Takarazuka-like as a result...Lady Eboshi has faced loads of misfortunes in her past (Please refer to 2-10/15 for more details of Lady Eboshi's background) and for that reason, her voice becomes very enraged and desperate when she says to Ashitaka, ''Enough for a show of your small misfortune!''A cow keeper Koroku is played by a great actor Masahiko NISHIMURA, whose shouting, screaming acting amazes all in here. Nishimura also makes a surprise improvisation and Miyazaki seems to love it and so does Producer Suzuki!Lastly, we recognise Princess Mononoke as a completed 144,000 cel animation film but at the stage of just months before its premiere release, we now know the film had been far from its complesion. So much striving of more than the best each Ghibli staff could make is significant here.Enjoy this great seires anyhow then (; [ More Detail ]

3-3/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 3rd episode of the 3rd series we firstly see the gravity of Ashitaka's muttering as short a phrase as ''I see...'' when he realises to see the Irontown as the very cause of the curse he inherited from Nago, the demonised boar god, while also recognises it as a sacred place for the women (the former prostitutes; picked up by Lady Eboshi) and the lepers (also saved by Eboshi) working there.Eboshi's sole loyal aide Gonza is played by Tsunehiko KAMIJO, who and Miyazaki are the neighbors each other in Shinshu (in the northeast) where the two have mountain lodges. When Kamijo-san finishes his part and leaves for his lodge, Director seems to get sort of envious looking at his neighbor leaving for a nice fresh air in the mountain.Ugly but mysterious Jigobo is acted by a handsome, brilliant actor Kaoru KOBAYASHI (who actually jokes about it to Miyazaki). This Jigobo figure embodies so much complexity within a matured man, who, according to Director, lives in a world of words, logics, sounding phony fishy, but comical all the time. He's good at convincing people, deceiving people, and preaching sermons while keeping a straight face all the while. In terms of contrasting this matured comical Jigobo character, Miyazaki explains to Koboyashi the hero Ashitaka as a symbol of gloomy young generation with inherited curses of the reality, that is to say, the ones with AIDS, or Atopic Dermatitis, to name a few.Lastly, an exquisite actress Yuko TANAKA voices for another extremely important and complicated character Lady Eboshi.Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

3-2/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 2nd episode of the 3rd series we see Yoji Matsuda plays the role for Ashitaka. When it comes to the lines of ''Someone, give a hand now.'' Matsuda-san utters them in quite a serious way but Miyazaki then let him know with an analogy (which is very uniquely Miyazaki's way) that it's like your appearing in an acquaintance's hectic moving scene where you say things only to relax a tensed, upset atmosphere there. San is played by Yuriko Ishida, who has great struggles in acting this proud, fierce but somewhat child-like heroine. According to Miyazaki, San regards herself as ugly because all the human-beings are ugly things to her and while she wishes to become one of those wolves she's never able to get away from her human self.Lastly, Sumi Shimamoto, the very voice actress who dubbed the voice for Nausicaa in ''Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind'', plays the role of Toki, a leader figure of working ladies in Irontown.Shimamoto-san seems to be having a difficulty in taking off a gentle persona of hers when a brusque, nasty sarcastic tone is desired in Toki's words.Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

Woot woot! I've been thinking about how I wanted to make this AMV since summer 2007... O_O And I finally got to it! So I used my 4 favorite movies by Hayao Miyazaki (though I have to admit, my favorite ones change all the time... xD) and I thought that Imogen Heap's song Headlock fit the types of scenes nicely. Enjoy!Movies: Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し)Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫)Castle in the Sky (天空の城ラピュタ)Howl's Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城)NOTE: I'm sorry that I can't reply to all of your comments, but I read every single one I get, and they are very much appreciated! 2-15/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this last segment of the 2nd series, we witness Miyazaki sitting and working as usual; only, his back giving out somewhat scary violent aura this time. Director can't stand the fact that one of the animators depicted running Ashitaka with kinetically wrong movements, and to make it worse, did so wrongly in a timid way. Miyazaki explains it's due to the animator's stuck-up prejudiced mind which decides what running should be like and cannot get away a step from that bias. Also, he insists if an animator have a timid attitude toward life, it really shows on the paper, and the result is ruining the characters and thus, the animation.Miyazaki continues that only the sort who could digest all the frustrations in real life for an energy to move the characters on the sheets can be a qualified animator (or anyone doing a creative stuff), which sounds powerful and convincing when it's uttered from Miyazaki, since that's exactly how he's kept doing all his life.Look forward to the coming last series that is the 3rd chapter as well then ( ; [ More Detail ]

2-14/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 14th episode of the 2nd series, Miyazaki manages to finish the original version of the storyboards on the day before his birthday (since a revision he had spent a whole week for wasn't favored by Ghibli staff he decided to take the original version. Please refer to the last episode that is 2-13/15 for more details), only to find out Producer Suzuki giving No for that. Suzuki suggests Director to revise it and furthermore, to kill Lady Eboshi in a revision. After a consideration, the (2nd) revision is to get extended by 15 minutes, that means extra 3 months' load of work for Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki feels guilty and does not only his own parts but also the others' such as layout work. Actually it's no wonder he's good at the layouts since that's what he used to be doing for a long time while working under Director Isao TAKAHATA (高畑勲: Miyazaki's long-term senior colleague and the former co-head of Studio Ghibli). In the latter half of this episode we'll witness making of the mysterious Nightwalker (or ''Daidarabocchi'' in the Japanese folk tales meaning ''a giant man'', though here in Princess Mononoke Nightwalker is what Shishigami or the forest God alters into at night ).Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

2-13/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 13th episode of the 2nd series, first we recognise Miyazaki's spent a whole week revising near-the-ending part of his storyboards; Only to find out everyone (especially a Genga animator Shinohara-san) prefers the original version far better. Miyazaki isn't feeling happy at all to know this fact at first, of course, but gradually gets persuaded and decides to take the 1st version at last. The latter half of this episode consists of the recording scenes of Mononoke's theme song, written by Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎駿), composed by Jo Hisaishi (久石譲), and sung by a splendid counter-tenor singer Yoshikazu Mera (米良美一: a male singer with female voice). How the perspective and underlying meanings of its lyrics gradually get understood by the singer is very dramatic to witness here for the viewers....and an outcome of the singer's struggle in trying to fathom the song at a deep level is just devinely...Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

2-12/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 12th episode of the 2nd series, first we see Ghibli Producer Toshio Suzuki and the other PR reps. get together for a meeting to talk about the upcoming issues such as voice casts and the counter-tenor singer Yoshikazu Mera (米良美一)who's to sing Mononoke's theme song. Also, Producer Suzuki reports what kind of reactions he sensed from the American audience seen Mononoke's trailer while he was in the United States for the negotiations with the Disney. Then, there's another interesting theory of Miyazaki's pops out which insists that while the Western tend to percept an object as a piece of block, the Eastern are more likely to see it as a combination of the lines. Next, Miyazaki explains to a Genga animator Minowa-san that the spiral patterns Shishigami (Forest God) has represent the circulative law of lives, whirling image of fluid, extending image of growing ivies....thus, non-stoppable power of lives, in a word. Then the topics switch to be on Jigobo's basic characteristics...which seem to be as complicated as those of Eboshi's since the both look so non- stereo-typical...All the same, it sounds quite easy to understand when explained by Miyazaki, according to whom, Jigobo's personality isn't an evil one at all and he IS one cheerful guy actually. Director mutters Jigobo's and the other three's comical run-away scene might not be fully recognisable as so comedic without the knowledge of old-fashioned comedy films.Lastly enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

2-11/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

Many thanks for your patience! I'm back. In this 11th episode of the 2nd series, first we see Miyazaki giving accurate advice for the Genga cut Konishi-san drew where Okkotonushi (a wild boar turned into a demonic god in spell of hatred) shakes off Ashitaka with fierce movements. Then, we witness Director confesses to the reporter Uratani-san how he really thinks and feels about depicting something as surreal, supernatural as the basic concept of Mononoke...Next, Miyazaki talks about his traumatic, frightening experience of watching the news film at a theatre when he was a child where the 1st Bikini H-bomb testing was broadcasted. This nuclear explosion image is reflected as ''the Great Explosion'' of Shishigami when his head gets decapitated in Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. Later of the explosion DOES come some sort of regeneration, revitalisation of the new green plants, though not so much in a hopeful way as the audience might expect but more on a mingy, skimpy level, explains the Director...Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]

In this 9th episode of the 2nd series, we once again see the scene where Ashitaka travels on in the rocky field through the quick weather changes. This time, however, it's Yasuda-san (Ghibli's color designer) who asks Miyazaki for detailed advice on the grass colors of the scene. The two seem to have this priority of keeping ''a sense of transparency'' or '' airiness'' in selecting out the colors and Yasuda-san explains why to our interviewer/ reporter Uratani-san.Next, we witness the backstage of filming rains, steams, smokes that appear in Princess Mononoke, all of which are depicted so finely at such an astounding level. Next, we understand that Miyazaki takes the lessons of the Kobe earthquake in 1995 seriously in a realistic way and gets fully prepared with the available provisions on a company level for a possible disastrous earthquake that's been rumored countless times to come in Kanto region (around Tokyo) sooner or later.Later, Takeshige-san at Art dept. has a meeting with Director to comfirm the details of the backgrounds where there are dramatic weather changes which also should imply Ashitaka's fate. Director then so delightedly starts to behave as if a kid who's just been given a superb toy! He tells us about what he wishes to take with those sorts of cameras if anything were possible...Having been so much troubled with stiff shoulders (as well as the inflamed tendons on his writing hand) due to the nature of his work, Miyazaki suggests to issue ''Seitaiken'' (「整体券」or 「せいたいけん」: Massage Tickets) for Ghibli Staff so that they could get treatments by professional massagers. We see there is a laughter when a female staff begins to explain about this newly implemented service in Staff's Committee since in Japanese the word ''Seitaiken'' could mean ''Sexual experience'' (「性体験」or 「せいたいけん」) as well if aurally comprehended!! Quite a devilish joker Miyazaki can be, playing with words like this now we understand...Lastly, Director and Producer get together to grab a concrete idea on Mononoke's soundtrack. 2-6/15 PRINCESS MONONOKE [Backstage]w/EnglishSub Thumbs list

In this 6th episode of the 2nd series, we see Ghibli Producer Toshio Suzuki throws a question whether the PR side should provide with a slogan of ''A Grande Spectacle'' so easily, so irresponsibly in a superficial level....since, according to him, a true grande spectacle movie should have rich story contents/ motifs that attract the audience and eventually make a hit.Suzuki confesses that around the time they were making ''Racoons' Battle in Heisei Era(「平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ」; released in 1994)'' they had changed their basic principle not to compete with enormously budgeted Holloywood's huge production movies but rather to caricature reality from a misertable, pitiful, helpless standpoint. This time, however, Ghibli seems to be ready to prove the audience that Princess Mononoke couldn't be just another Anime stuff by showing the ''hard-boiled brutal'' side of the nature that Nausicaa missed to be able to depict 13 years before.Later, we witness Miyazaki's commuting style as a Porco Rosso popped out in reality but there's this another fact that Miyazaki's been living on the simplest, most old-fashioned food by always bringing his lunchbox (that his wife prepares but Miyazaki does fix his lunchbox when she's not available) for decades. (Miyazaki seems to be famous for not eating out fancy food.)Lastly, the reporting crew sneak in and place a tiny camera at the corner of Miyazaki's work desk so that we could witness how he is really like while he's working.Enjoy this great series anyhow then ( ; [ More Detail ]
